CLINTON, Miss. --- Spring sports seniors across the nation had their collegiate careers cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A time-honored tradition across all athletic departments is to celebrate "Senior Day" by recognizing each of the members of their senior class for their efforts while a part of their program.
At Mississippi College, we wanted to let each one of our spring sports student-athletes have their own "Senior Day" to thank them for their time as Choctaws and Lady Choctaws. Their contributions to their teams and the athletic department will always be remembered.
SHAYLA MCKISSOCK --- SOFTBALL
A native of Bryant, Ark.,
Shayla McKissock played four years in the outfield for the Lady Choctaws, seeing action in 153 games with 119 career starts.
"Coaching Shayla for four years has been a complete honor," said head coach
Brooke O'Hair. "She works for a purpose, not just to work. She expects greatness out of herself and will work or study until she can't get it wrong. Shayla brings so much energy and spunk to our team. Above all that, I'm even more proud of her off-the-field accomplishments. She's a leader and will save lives one day.
"Shayla, thanks for trusting me so many years ago, even when it seemed like a lot of change," O'Hair went on. "I'm honored to have been your coach, and I'm going to miss you dearly."
The four-time GSC Academic Honor Roll honoree will finish 6th in school history in both stolen bases (59) and stolen base attempts (70). She'll also finish 12th in runs scored (91) and the Arkansas native picked up her 100th career hit this season.
McKissock was a part of two NCAA Tournament appearances for the Lady Choctaws and a Gulf South Conference championship in 2017 as a freshman. She also earned All-Academic Team honors in 2019.
"Shayla is smarter than just about any player I've ever coached," said assistant coach
Leigh Streetman. "She understands the game and everything it has to offer. Her high energy and spunky personality were game changers and gave the rest of her team something to feed off of.
"I am thankful for the three years I got to coach Shayla and for the dedication, resilience and heart she poured into this program," Streetman finished.
Shayla is majoring in Biology Medical Sciences and is the daughter of Karen and Lance Bonvillian and Bill McKissock.
Every day for the next five weeks, we will recognize a senior for their contributions on and off the field for their respective programs. The baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track & field programs will all be represented in alphabetical order, regardless of sport.
