A three-year starter at outside linebacker, Ashley led the Choctaw football team in tackles en route to All-Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Year laurels in 1979. Captain of the football team, he led MC to its first 10-win campaign. An All-GSC First Team performer on the gridiron, he is ranked second in single-season unassisted tackles for the Choctaws. Captain of the track team in 1979, Ashley set a GSC meet record in the javelin. His prowess in the sport led to a spot on the All-GSC Track and Field team. A three-year letterman in track and field, he signed as a free agent with the New York Giants of the NFL and the Alabama Magic of the American Football Association.
