CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College's men's soccer team celebrated a commanding 3-0 victory over Union University in their Gulf South Conference home opener on Friday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
The Choctaws, now 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in GSC play, displayed a potent offense, outshooting Union 16-7 and putting six shots on goal compared to Union's four.
The scoring began in the 75th minute when Luke Fanstone found the back of the net with an assist from Jayce Dotson. Just over two minutes later, Lewis Matton doubled the lead, scoring his first goal with Fanstone providing the assist. Matton capped off the scoring spree with his second goal of the match in the 81st minute, sealing a dominant performance for the Choctaws.
"It was a great team effort today," said MC head coach Kevin Johns. "The boys played with confidence and executed our game plan well."
Union, now 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in GSC action, struggled to generate offense, recording only one shot in the first half. Goalkeeper Cole Turner led the Choctaws' defense with four saves, keeping a clean sheet throughout the match.
Mississippi College will return to action on Monday, with a matchup scheduled against Christian Brothers, at 3 p.m. at Robert P. Longabaugh Field
