Mississippi College Athletics COVID-19 Update

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College athletic department, in conjunction with the university and President Dr. Blake Thompson, has made the decision to continue playing regularly scheduled spring athletic events with limited attendance at home events, it was announced on Thursday (March 12).

This is obviously a fluid situation and circumstances could change with new information coming in daily. The MC Athletics department will be in daily contact with the Gulf South Conference to make decisions going forward that are in the best interest of the health and safety of our student-athletes, staff members and fans.

The university made the decision on Thursday to extend Spring Break for students through Sunday, March 22. Starting on Monday, March 23, classes will transition to online instruction through at least April 3. The full release from Mississippi College can be found below.

All home events for Mississippi College athletics will be limited in attendance to four family members or friends listed on the official pass list. There will be no admission for anyone not listed on the list with no exceptions.

The next scheduled home events were to be played on March 21st and 22nd with baseball and softball facing Christian Brothers, but CBU made the decision today to suspend all athletics practices and competitions through April 14th. The games will be canceled with no make-up dates to be set. Click HERE for the full Christian Brothers release.

Spring football was scheduled to begin the week after spring break but will now be postponed with the dates to be announced.

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE RELEASE

Mississippi College is assessing the rapidly changing spread of the coronavirus. On March 11, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. Our primary concern is the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff, and we recognize that we need to act in the best interest of our nation's common good.

While there are no cases of COVID-19 on our campus at this time, we want to minimize our risk. We are consulting with health agencies as well as other institutions. Along with many other institutions, the university has taken these steps:

1) MC will extend Spring Break for students through Sunday, March 22. We encourage students not to return to campus this week. Faculty and staff should report as normal on Monday, March 16.

2) Starting Monday, March 23, classes will transition to online instruction through at least April 3. Students are encouraged to remain at home and participate in their classes remotely. Students enrolled in certain clinical and research/lab classes will be notified of any exceptions.

3) All student activities are cancelled through at least April 3. Athletic events are under review with the Gulf South Conference.

4) University-sponsored international travel and non-essential domestic travel is suspended until further notice.

As this situation evolves, we will continue to update information on our website mc.edu/coronavirus.

Our goal is to safeguard our MC family and provide students, faculty, and staff with a successful completion of our spring semester.
