Baseball Preview: Montevallo Series

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team returns to action on Friday, March 29 as it opens a three-game series against the University of Montevallo. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. The series with the Falcons is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, March 30 with a doubleheader at 12 p.m.

THE SERIES
• Mississippi College and Montevallo meet for the sixth time in program history on Friday, March 29 when the two squads meet in Clinton. The Falcons lead the series 4-1 heading into Friday. The two teams met three times last season with UM winning two of three outings. Despite playing five times in series history, Friday marks the first, Gulf South Conference game between the two institutions.
 
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
• Montevallo enters the weekend series having lost its last two outings, including an 8-3 loss to the University of West Florida on Wednesday evening.
• The Falcons are led by Khari Anderson at the plate with a .407 clip. Tyler Krabbe is the only other Falcon with a plus-.300 batting average with a .336. Krabbe leads the team with 41 hits, 10 home runs and 44 RBI. UM is hitting .249 as a team this season with a total of 33 home runs and 162 RBI.
• The Purple and Gold pitching staff has combined for a 5.48 ERA this season and have fanned 234 batters while holding its opposition to .287 batting average. Chandler Ingram paces the squad with a 2.95 ERA. Chrit Rudkin leads the team with 57 strikeouts in 53 innings.
• Montevallo was founded on October 12, 1996 and has an average enrollment of 2,600. UM ranks 42nd in the 2019 edition of Best College's in the South according to US News.
• The Falcons became the official mascot of UM in 1959, when the student newspaper, The Alabamian, held a contest to select a nickname and mascot. Ronald Smith, an undergraduate at the time, won the prize money for submitting "Falcons." At the time the school only sponsored two sports, baseball and men's golf, and the teams were often called the "Purples" in local papers until the new name was chosen.
 
HAWORTH VS. MONTEVALLO
• Mississippi College head coach Jeremy Haworth is 1-3 against Montevallo in his career. All four meetings have come during his time in Clinton.
 
RECORD CHASING
• Blaine Crim is the all-time leader in at-bats (649), second in hits (223), home runs (30), RBI (174) and total bases (365); third in runs (140) and doubles (46); and fifth in games played (172).
• Tommy Taborda is third in saves (9) and seventh in appearances (50).
• Zack Ingram is 10th in career innings pitched with 179.2 and 10th in starts with 30. He is six strikeouts from the top 10 in career strikeouts.
• Ryan Lane moved to fifth in career saves with his first of the season at Lee. Lane have seven career saves.
• Chris Crosby sits just outside the top 10 in strikeouts and games started. Crsoby is 12th with 137 strikeouts and 15th in starts with 24.
 
LAST TIME OUT: ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
• Mississippi College fell 7-5 in 11 innings to Arkansas-Monticello. The setback is the first in extra innings this season for the Choctaws and disrupts a run of two straight. Hunter Sykes led the Choctaws at the dish with two hits while driving in three runs. Billy Cameron joined Sykes in the multi-hit category with a pair of his own. MC totaled 10 hits in the contest and out-hit the Boll Weevils 10-8 in the contest. Tim Holloway (1-1) took the loss on the mound, his first of the season, as he pitched the final three innings in relief. Holloway, one of eight Choctaw hurlers to take the rubber, allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
