Baseball Preview: Lindenwood Series

CLINTON, Miss. --- The No. 18 Mississippi College baseball team opens its home slate on Saturday, Feb. 9 as it faces Lindenwood University in the first of two doubleheaders at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium. First pitch of the twinbill is slated for 1 p.m.
 
The two squads close out the four-game series on Sunday, Feb. 10 with a 1 p.m. start.

THE SERIES
• Mississippi College and Lindenwood meet for the seventh time when the two teams take to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 9 in a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. The Choctaws and LU will meet four times during the weekend with the series set to close on Sunday, Feb. 10.
• Lindenwood leads the series with a 4-2 record despite MC taking the series from the Lions last season in Clinton. LU swept the initial series between the two schools in 2017.
• Mississippi College and Lindenwood have met on the diamond within the first two weeks of the season since 2017. Like the 2019 campaign, the Lions were the second opponent on the schedule for the Navy and Gold. MC opened 2018 with the then-nationally ranked Lions.
• With the series this weekend, all 10 meetings between the two schools have taken place at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium.
 
HAWORTH VS. LINDENWOOD
• Mississippi College skipper Jeremy Haworth is 2-4 against Lindenwood in his eight seasons as a head coach. The Choctaws head man has only faced the Lions since being at the helm of the program. Haworth led the Navy and Gold is a series win over then-nationally ranked LU in Clinton.
 
SCOUTING THE LIONS
• Lindenwood head coach Doug Bletcher enters his 12th season at the helm of the Lions. Bletcher has posted a 349-245-1 record in St. Charles. He is 708-427-2 in his career.
• With this weekend's action against the Choctaws, Lindenwood is facing its second Gulf South Conference foe this season. The Lions opened 2019 against Lee University, going 1-3 against the Flames.
• LU has three players hitting plus-.333 after the opening weekend. Dominic Revetta leads the Lions with a .600 batting average with six hits, including a home run, and a pair of RBI. Ryan Venne sits second on the team in average and hits with a .500 clip and five hits. Mitchell Krebs hit .333 against LU.
• Jacob Thompson picked up the only Lindenwood win on the mound against the Flames. Thompson recorded five strikeouts in five innings. The Lions' pitching staff tallied a 4.66 ERA.
• Next up for Lindenwood is Augustana University and Lake Erie College on Saturday, Feb. 16.
 
LANE NAMED GSC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
• Senior Ryan Lane was named Gulf South Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week. The right-handed hurler struck out a career-high nine Harding batters, including a string of seven straight over the course of the second through fourth innings.
• The Meridian, Miss., native's previous of seven was set in his MC debut against Florida Tech on Feb. 4, 2017.
 
CHOCTAWS VS. MIAA
• Mississippi College enters the weekend with a 4-4 record against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Choctaws are 2-0 against Central Oklahoma and 2-4 against Lindenwood.
 
HAWORTH VS. MIAA
• Mississippi College head coach Jeremy Haworth is 4-8 against the MIAA. Haworth has recorded wins over Lindenwood and Central Missouri during his coaching career. The Choctaw skipper has also faced Nebraska-Kearney and Pittsburg State.
 
NO. 18 CHOCTAWS SWEEP HARDING
• Mississippi College picked up its first sweep since March 4, 2018 at Shorter University.
• MC hit .266 against the Bisons with 25 hits, including eight doubles and three home runs, and drove in 17 runs. The Choctaws had five players post batting averages of .333 or better led by Grant Barber with a .417 clip. The Mobile, Ala., native also posted a team-best five hits. Newcomer Chauncey Callier hit .400 in his MC debut and finished tied for second in hits with four. Billy Cameron led the squad with four RBI.
• Ryan Lane, Zack Ingram and Garrett Hollinghead picked up all three wins on the mound while Tommy Taborda added a pair of saves. The Choctaw pitching staff earned a 2.88 ERA and fanned 30 batters, including nine each from Lane and Ingram.
 
RECORD CHASING
• After the weekend at Harding, two Choctaws moved up the career record lists.
• Blaine Crim moved up the career charts in hits (2nd) with 188, doubles (6th) with 35 and runs scored (9th) with 117.
• Tommy Taborda moved the list in saves (3rd) with 8 and appearances (7th) with 48.
 
CHOCTAWS IN SEASON OPENERS
• With a 12-6 win at Harding on Friday, Feb. 1, Mississippi College is 3-1 under head coach Jeremy Haworth in his four seasons in Clinton. The Choctaws defeated Tougaloo College in Haworth's first season in 2016 and knocked off nationally-ranked Lindenwood to start the 2018 season. The setback in season lidlifters came in 2017 as the Choctaws fell to Florida Tech.
• Mississippi College opens the 2019 on the road for the first time under Haworth. The last time MC opened the season on the road was 2014 when the Navy and Gold traveled to nearby Jackson, Miss., to face Belhaven University.

CHOCTAWS TABBED GSC FAVORITE
• Mississippi College was selected as the top team in the Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Choctaws received nine of the 13 first place votes.
• Grant Barber, Billy Cameron and Blaine Crim were named to the Preseason All-GSC Team. The trio were all 2018 all-conference players for the Navy and Gold.
• Chauncey Callier and Garrett Hollinghead were placed on the top newcomers to watch list in the conference. The duo comes to Clinton from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College.

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
