Baseball Preview: Quincy (Ill.)

CLINTON, Miss. --- The No. 18 Mississippi College baseball team returns to the diamond this weekend as the Choctaws (6-1) host Quincy (Ill.) University in a three-game series starting on the Friday, Feb. 15. The Friday twinbill is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
 
The series finale is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16 with a 2 p.m. start.
 
Friday's action marks the first meeting between Mississippi College and Quincy in program history.
 
The Choctaws are coming off a 3-1 series win over Lindenwood (Mo.) University last weekend in the first action at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium this season.
 
MC split a Saturday doubleheader against LU with the Navy and Gold picking up a 3-2, extra-inning win in the series opener. The Lions rallied to deadlock the day with a 3-1 win. The Navy and Gold wrapped up the series as it routed Lindenwood 15-2 and 10-0 on Sunday to claim the series 3-1. The Choctaws hit .300 on the weekend with 36 hits, including four home runs, and drove in 23 runs. The MC hurlers held the Lions to a .188 batting average with 31 strikeouts in 31 innings. The staff posted a 1.74 ERA for the series.
 
This weekend's action marks the season opener for Quincy. The Hawks, which won the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, are picked third in the Preseason GLVC Coaches Poll. QU picked up two of the 14 of the first place votes. The Brown and Gold were selected behind Bellarmine University and Illinois-Springfield. Quincy returners Cody Birdsong and Michael Nielsen, who were tabbed with National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Region accolades. Birdsong, who was named to the first team, hit .353 with 14 home runs and 57 RBI, last season. Nielson picked up second team laurels after hitting .315 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI.
Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
 
The athletic department sponsors 17 intercollegiate athletic programs: Baseball, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Cross Country, Football, Golf, Men's and Women's Soccer, Softball, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field, Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field and Volleyball.
