Baseball Preview: Valdosta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team returns to Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, Apr. 1 as it travels to Valdosta, Ga., to face Valdosta State in a three-game series. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday's finale is slated for 12 p.m. Both times are central.
 
THE SERIES
  • Mississippi College and Valdosta State meet for the 19th time in the series history on Saturday. VSU leads the series 15-3, including the last six outings.

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE NOTES
  • The Choctaws are riding a five-game win streak heading into the weekend slate. MC topped William Carey 20-10 on Tuesday evening at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium.
  • MC totaled a season-high 23 hits in the effort as eight Choctaws recorded multiple hits and all nine batters recording a hit. Will Elliott led the Navy and Gold with four hits, three RBI and four runs scored. The senior from Oxford, Miss., also tallied his third home run of the season.
  • Hunter Wilson, Hunter Austin, Kyle Smith and Casey Echols each tallied three hits while Hunter Sykes, Kyle Smith and Blaine Crim each posted a pair of hits in the game. Crim added a team-best four RBI in the performance.
  • Tommy Taborda (1-2) registered his first win of the season with 1.0 inning of work in relief. The sophomore hurler allowed two runs on one hit with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
  • Echols continues to pace the Navy and Gold at the dish with a season-best .385 clip while Chance Whitten leads the squad with seven home runs and is tied with Crim for tops on the team with 20 RBI.
  • Taborda stands as the only pitcher with 30-plus strikeouts this season as the sophomore has 36 on the campaign.  Three Choctaws sit tied for second behind Taborda as Tim Holloway, Hunter Lacefield and Hunter Mullis each have 27.
 
VALDOSTA STATE NOTES
  • The Blazers are 21-10 on the season and 11-7 in the GSC. VSU rides a two-game, win streak after taking a midweek contest against Georgia Southwestern and the final game at Lee last weekend to secure a series against the Flames.
  • Dalton Murray and Luke Suchon pace the Red and Black's offense with the two hitting over .400 this season. Murray leads the team with a .418 clip and 26 RBI while Suchon is hitting .402 and has a team-best 45 hits.
  • On the mound, Austin Hamilton and Hunter Jones have recorded 50-plus strikeouts this season. Hamilton leads the team with 67 while Jones has tallied 51.

  • Following the weekend road trip, Mississippi College returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 5 as it hosts nationally-ranked Southern Arkansas. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
