Women’s Soccer Preview: GSC Semifinals

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will resume play in the Gulf South Conference Postseason Tournament on Friday, Nov. 3 when they take on West Florida in the semifinal round at 5:00 p.m. at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Ala.
 
MC NOTES
- The Choctaws (14-2-1) knocked off the Tigers of West Alabama 5-1 in the quarterfinal round of the tournament in their most recent action on Tuesday, Oct. 31 in Clinton.
- MC heads into Friday's matchup with West Florida riding a five-match win streak, a mark that ranks for a season high. The Choctaws put together five straight wins earlier in the year, spanning from Sept. 22 through Oct. 6. The Choctaws have tallied 10 wins in their last 11 contests.
- In the most recent United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Poll, the Lady Choctaws moved up to number 11 in the country; their highest ranking since becoming a full-time member of Division II. MC also checked in at number two in the South Regional Rankings.
- The Lady Choctaws saw three of their players named to the GSC All-Conference squads on Monday, Oct. 30. Caitlin Hayes and Andrea McDonald took home first-team honors, and Scarlett Hodges was named to the second team.
- The Lady Choctaw defense will bring with them a GSC-best 0.59 goals against average into their matchup with West Florida on Friday. Through 17 games, the Lady Choctaws have allowed just 10 goals, while allowing just 7.4 shots per game from their opponents.
- Goalkeeper Andrea McDonald boasts a conference-best 0.53 goals against average, a mark that ties for the lowest single season GAA in MC women's soccer program history. The junior keeper's seven shutouts ranks tied for second best in the GSC, while also leading the conference in save percentage (0.848).
- On offense, The Lady Choctaws have seen a rise in production over their last five matches, averaging 3.6 goals per contest over that stretch.
- MC is currently averaging 2.29 goals per contest, a mark that ranks for fourth in the conference.
- Junior forward Lauren Smith currently paces the Lady Choctaws in goals scored (8), points accumulated (20) and ties for the team lead in assists (4). Hayes and Lauren Kate Carter sit tied with Smith, with a team-best four assists on the season.
- The Lady Choctaws will look to add to a season-best five match streak in which they have scored multiple goals in a match, scoring at least two per game over that current stretch of matches.
 
WEST FLORIDA NOTES
- The Argos (15-3-1) defeated the number 6-seed Christian Brothers 4-1 in their most recent action in the quarterfinal round of the GSC Postseason Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
- West Florida heads into Friday's matchup with MC riding an eight-match win streak that dates all the way back to Oct. 11. Of those eight wins, six have come in shutout fashion.
- The Argos saw three players named to the GSC All-Conference Teams, with Shantell Thompson garnering first-team honors and Deneisha Blackwood and Leonie Kreil taking home second-team honors.
- The Argonaut attack currently paces the GSC in goals scored (56) and goals scored per match (2.95). Leonie (8), Blackwood (8) and Jessica Quixley (7) make up for 23 of West Florida's 56 scores. Leonie and (9) and Thompson (8) have recorded 17 of West Florida's 36 assists.
- On defense, West Florida is allowing their opponents to score 0.79 goals per match, a mark that sits third behind Lee University and the Lady Choctaws for fewest in the conference.
- Goalkeeper Katelyn Burkhart (14-1) currently paces the GSC in shutouts (8) while sitting behind McDonald for the second-lowest GAA (0.54)
 
SERIES HISTORY
- The Lady Choctaws bring an all-time record of 2-3 against the West Florida into Friday's matchup. In their most recent meeting earlier in the year, the Lady Choctaws pulled off a last-minute 1-0 victory in Pensacola, Fla.
- This will be the second-straight year in which the Lady Choctaws will face off against the Argos in the GSC Postseason Tournament. West Florida bested MC 2-0 last season in the championship game of the tournament.
 
MATCH COVERAGE
- Both live stats and streaming video will be available for Friday's contest through the Gulf South Conference's portal with stretch internet.
- The winner of Friday's contest will move on to the championship round of the tournament, where they will face the winner of the Valdosta State vs. Lee match at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5.
