Lady Choctaws Advances With 1-0 Win Over Lee University

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Mississippi College (8-8-3, 5-5-2) secured a 1-0 victory over Lee University (11-3-3, 9-2-1) on Saturday night at Ray Conn Sports Complex, with the lone goal being scored in the first half. This victory marked a significant achievement for MC, as they became just the third seventh-seed to advance to the semifinals since the GSC field expanded to eight teams in 2017.

The match commenced with Mississippi College establishing an early advantage. In the 13th minute, Vail Wartes capitalized on an assist from Charlie Cooper to put the visitors ahead. This goal set the tone for MC, who maintained the pressure throughout the period.

Defensively, Celine Grothe's key save in the 41st minute thwarted a shot from Grace Berry, preserving the lead. The Choctaws concluded the first half with a 1-0 advantage, holding Lee scoreless and heading into the break with momentum.

The second period began with The Blue and Gold maintaining their defensive stance, highlighted by Grothe's key saves. Grothe denied Lee's Whitney Carrigan's shot in the 82nd minute and followed up with another save against Madleen Franz shortly after. MC managed to keep Lee from finding the back of the net despite multiple attempts from their opponents.

Offensively, The Blue and Gold had a promising opportunity from a corner kick in the 52nd minute, with Aidyn Hagan's shot being saved by Lee's goalkeeper. The period saw MC called offside twice, but they continued to press forward with corner kicks at strategic moments.

The period concluded with MC holding their 1-0 advantage, successfully keeping Lee scoreless through solid defensive efforts.
