CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team will kick off play in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, November 12 when they face off against West Florida at 1:00 p.m. in the South Sub-Regional Championship match in Florence, Ala.
MC NOTES
- The Lady Choctaws (15-3-1) were named the number one seed in the South Region on Monday, November 6 during the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Selection Show, earning them a bye in the first round of the regional tournament.
- The selection on Monday marked for both the first time that the Lady Choctaws have been selected to the NCAA Tournament, and the first time the Lady Choctaws have served as the number-one seed in a postseason regional tournament.
- MC is coming off a second consecutive trip to the Gulf South Conference championship match, dropping the final to Lee University by a score of 1-0 on Sunday, Nov. 5. The Lady Choctaws were the number two seed in the tournament and grabbed wins over West Alabama (5-1) and West Florida (2-0) to move on to the title match.
- The Lady Choctaws came in at number 12 in the latest Division II national poll compiled by the United Soccer Coaches Association on Tuesday, November 7, the second-highest ranking the Lady Choctaws have received since becoming a full-time member of DII.
- MC enters regional play having given up just 11 goals through 19 games, for a GSC-leading goal's against average of 0.58. All Gulf South Conference First-Team Selections
Andrea McDonald and
Caitlin Hayes have helped lead a Lady Choctaw defense that has pitched a conference-best ten shutouts.
- In goal, McDonald (11-3-1) paces the GSC in fewest goals allowed (8) goals against average (0.53), save percentage (0.846) and ties for the lead in shutouts (8). McDonald, who ranks in the top-20 nationally in goals against average, currently ranks tied for the lowest single-season GAA in MC women's soccer program history.
- The Lady Choctaw offense has scored multiple goals in six of their last seven matches, averaging 2.9 goals scored per match over that stretch.
- Junior forward
Lauren Smith paces the Lady Choctaw attack, with nine goals scored and 22 points accumulated on the season. Smith was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team earlier in the week on Thursday, Nov. 9 for her efforts both on and off the field. Sophomore forward
Emma Claire Furman sits second behind Smith with six goals netted and 14 total points on the year.
- Sophomore Midfielder
Katie Taylor leads the Lady Choctaws with five assists, including two in the Lady Choctaw's GSC Semifinal win over West Florida on Friday, Nov. 3.
Lauren Kate Carter,
Caitlin Hayes and Smith all have distributed four assists on the year, good enough for second on the team. Fourteen different Lady Choctaws have scored a goal on the season, while 14 different players have recorded an assist in 2017.
UWF NOTES
- The Argos (16-4-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat North Alabama 3-2 in double overtime on Friday, Nov. 10 in the opening round of the South Sub-Regional.
- The Argos head into Sunday's matchup having netted 59 goals through 21 matches, for a GSC-best average of 2.81 goals scored per contest.
- The Argos are led by All Gulf South Conference First Team Selection Shantell Thompson, and second team selections Deneisha Blackwood and Leonie Kreil
Kreil (8), Blackwood (8) and Jessica Quixley (8) all lead the Argos in goal scored, while account for 24 of UWF's 59 goals.
- Thompson currently paces West Florida with 10 assists distributed, while Krill's nine assists helps makeup for 19 of the Argo's 36 assists.
- On defense, the Argos are currently allowing 0.90 goals per match, with 19 allotted in their 21 contests.
- Goalkeeper Katelyn Burkhardt (15-2) will look to add to her eight shutouts on the season, a mark that ties for the GSC lead with McDonald.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Lady Choctaws bring an all-time record of 3-3 against West Florida into their matchup on Sunday. The Choctaws have knocked off the Argos in both of their meetings during the 2017 season, including their most recent 2-0 victory in the GSC Semifinals.
REGIONAL COVERAGE
- Both live stats and streaming video will be available for Sunday's sub-regional championship match through UNA's portal with Stretch Internet.
- The winners of each sub-regional will advance to the "Sweet 16" (Nov. 17) where the winner will face the Southeast Region champion (Nov. 19) with a trip to the Final Four on the line. The national semifinals are scheduled for November 30th with the national title match scheduled for December 2nd in Kansas City, Missouri.
