CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team will welcome William Carey to Frierson Field on Wednesday night for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
SERIES RECORDÂ Â Â
The Choctaws (11-24) and the Crusaders (20-19) have met 37 previous times with WC holding a 29-8 edge in the series. The teams have not played since 1995 when MC went to Hattiesburg and lost, 4-2.
NOTES ON THE CHOCTAWSÂ Â Â
Brian Owens is in his 9th season as the head coach at Mississippi College. The former Mississippi State pitcher won his 200th career game on February 19th against Union Univiersity, needing 16 innings to get the milestone victory, 3-2.
Owens earned his first career victory on February 10, 2007 with a 26-5 win over Tougaloo College. He led the 2010 Choctaws to the Division III West Region final, finishing just one game shy of the College World Series. That team went 39-11, opening the season at 17-1.
The Choctaws return to Frierson Field after a tight series at West Florida that saw them lose two of the three games in UWF's final at-bats. Senior
Brooks Fortenberry held the Argonauts to just seven hits over a complete game effort in a 3-2 loss. In that game, junior
Caleb Upton hit a game-tying 2-run home run in the 7th inning to extend the game.
Junior
Colton Caver led the MC offense against UWF, going 5-for-12 (.417) with two runs scored and an RBI. He also went 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run and scored the game-winning run in a 5-4 win over Spring Hill last Wednesday.
Freshman
Kyle Smith, who was called in to duty after an injury to senior
Akiko Thompson, is MC's leading hitter with a .423 batting average. He has stolen seven bases and scored 10 runs on the year.
Junior
Kyle Cumlander had his best outing of the year last time out, allowing just three earned runs with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The Choctaws won the game on a walk-off single by
Hunter Hall and an error by Spring Hill.
The senior duo of
Andy Olmsted and
Grady Turman have been the most reliable options out of the bullpen this season. The two Jackson-area natives both have sub-3.00 ERA on the season, combining to walk just 10 batters in 36.2 innings.
