BASEBALL PREVIEW: North Alabama

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team will close out their home schedule this weekend when they host North Alabama for a three-game series, beginning Sunday with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. followed by a single game at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Frierson Field.

Due to the threat of rain this weekend, the series was pushed back to a Sunday-Monday set. "Senior Day" will be celebrated prior to the first game of the series.

SERIES RECORD
The Choctaws (12-27, 4-22 GSC) and the Lions (23-13, 11-12 GSC) have met 38 previous times with UNA holding a 29-8-1 advantage in the series. The schools have not played since the 1996 season, splitting a doubleheader in Clinton.

NOTES ON THE CHOCTAWS
Brian Owens is in his 9th  and final season as the head coach at Mississippi College. The former Mississippi State pitcher won his 200th career game on February 19th against Union Univiersity, needing 16 innings to get the milestone victory, 3-2.

Owens announced his resignation on Monday (April 13), effective at the completion of the 2015 season. A search for the next head baseball coach will begin immediately.

"We want to thank Coach Owens for an outstanding 10 years of service," said athletic director Mike Jones. "This is definitely not something that I wanted, but we want to wish him the best of luck in whatever he decides to do. I know that he will be successful in all of his future endeavors."

The Choctaws are coming off a series loss to rival Delta State last weekend, but the victory MC picked up in Game 2 of the three-game set was one of the top moments of the season. Trailing 6-4 in extra innings, the Choctaws came from behind and scored three, capped off by an RBI single from junior Austin Warkentin to win 7-6.

The weekend series against UNA marks the final home games of the season for the Choctaws. They will be recognizing seven seniors (Brooks Fortenberry, Jayme Monroe, Caleb Morris, Andy Olmsted, Marty Stringfellow, Akiko Thompson and Grady Turman) prior to the doubleheader on Saturday.

Fortenberry (Magee, Miss.) is a four-year player for the Choctaws, making 38 appearances with 30 starts on the mound. He ranks 4th in school history in strikeouts (186), 7th in innings pitched (212.2) and 8th in games started (30).

Monroe (Clinton, Miss.) has been sidelined most of this season due to injury, but his 3.41 career ERA is the 10th-best mark in school history. He went 5-5 with a 3.28 ERA and two complete games in 2014.

Morris (Midland City, Ala.) made the move to catcher this season. He had a double with four runs scored and two stolen bases in the 2014 season.

Olmsted (Brandon, Miss.) is a four-year player for the Choctaws, making 28 appearances on the mound, including a team-high 14 this season. He has a 3.16 career ERA with two saves in four seasons.

Stringfellow (Lucedale, Miss.) has made 69 career starts in his two seasons as a Choctaw. He led MC with a .362 batting average in 2014 and has tallied a .313 average with 11 doubles and 34 RBI over his two-year career.

Thompson (Clinton, Miss.) transferred to MC from Southeastern Louisiana for his senior season. He is hitting .337 with 26 runs scored and eight stolen bases. Thompson's three triples in the 9th-best single season mark in MC history.

Turman (Clinton, Miss.) has made 22 appearances out of the bullpen over his two seasons as a Choctaw. He is 5-4 in his career with two saves and a 3.93 ERA. Turman leads the team with a 3.32 ERA in 2015.
