Baseball Preview: Alabama Huntsville

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team will be back in action this weekend when they will host #15 Alabama Huntsville for a three-game series at Friesron Field. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Choctaws (8-4, 2-4 GSC) are led by head coach Brian Owens, who earned his 200th career victory last Thursday with a 3-2 win over Union University in 16 innings. The Chargers (7-1-1, 3-1-1 GSC) are led by 5th-year head coach Hunter Royer, who led UAH to the 2014 GSC Championship, the second in school history (2001).

MC is coming off their first GSC home series since 1996 when they hosted Union for a three-game set at Frierson Field. The Choctaws opened with a 3-2 win in 16 innings on Thursday, but the Bulldogs responded with wins in the final two games to take the series.

Senior Brooks Fortenberry is now 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA on the season and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in MC's win over Union on Thursday. He allowed just six hits and one earned run over 8.0 innings.

Tyler Scholl, who is the all-time leader in saves at Northwest MS CC, recorded his first save of the season in the opening series against Christian Brothers. He also went 5.1 innings in the 16-inning affair on Thursday, tallying five strikeouts.

Sophomore Hunter Bolin (.425) is the team's leading hitter and is tied for the team-lead witih 12 RBI and ranks 2nd on the squad with 17 hits, 13 run scored and three doubles. Junior Logan Ferrell earned his first starts as a Choctaw last weekend and tallied five hits in the series against Union.

Colton Caver (.404) is third on the team in hitting and has hit safely in all but one game this season. The junior leads the team with four doubles and has six multi-hit games this season, including going 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the series finale against Union.

The Chargers have seen three of their last five games postponed due to weather, including the series finale against Lee last weekend. UAH opened with a series win against West Georgia at home, winning the first and last games. They then traveled to Lee, picking up a win and a tie in Cleveland.

Daniel Koger is the team's ace on the mound, going 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA in three starts. In his last start against Lee, he went 7.0 innings and scattered six hits with six strikeouts while not allowing a run. Luke Mould is the team's closer, going 2-0 with two saves and a 0.00 ERA this season.

Cody Burton (.462) is the team's leading hitter, also leading the team with 12 hits, two doubles, two triples and 13 runs scored. Trey Mathis is hitting .379 this season with a team-high 10 RBI. Colton Simbeck leads the team with three home runs.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
This will be just the 2nd all-time meeting between the two schools with the last coming in 1996. The Choctaws and the Chargers faced off in the GSC Tournament with GSC taking a 10-3 win.

RECORD WATCH
Head coach Brian Owens earned his 200th career win last Thursday night against Union, needing 16 innings to record the milestone. After opening his career with a big win over Tougaloo, the former Mississippi State reliever has had a succesful run with the Choctaws. In 2010, he led MC to a 39-11 record and got the team within one game of the Division III World Series. His 100th career win came on April 20th of that season, a come-from-behind victory over Millsaps, 7-6.

Fortenberry has been a part of the starting rotation for the past two seasons and is climbing the lists in the record books at MC. With 164.0 career innings pitched, he is just six away from breaking into the top 10, while his 150 career strikeouts ranks 8th in school history.
