Choctaws Upset No. 4 UT Tyler, Sweep Weekend with Shutout of Lynn

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College men's tennis turned in an impressive weekend, knocking off No. 4 UT Tyler before blanking Lynn to complete a two-match sweep.

The Choctaws opened the weekend with a 4-1 victory over fourth-ranked UT Tyler on Friday before dominating Lynn 7-0 on Saturday. The pair of wins highlighted Mississippi College's strong play across singles and doubles competition.

Against nationally ranked UT Tyler, Mississippi College dropped the doubles point but rallied in singles to secure the upset.

Mattia Ricci led the comeback with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, while Matias Ruiz battled to a 7-6, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Sergio Ramirez Ocana added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, and Lucas Cavalcanti de Carvalho sealed the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6.

Mississippi College carried that momentum into Saturday's matchup against Lynn, where the Choctaws delivered a dominant 7-0 sweep.

In doubles play, the pairs of Mikayel Avanesyan and Charles Lefort at No. 2 and Sergio Ramirez Ocana and Joshua Hinton at No. 3 secured wins to clinch the opening point.

The Choctaws then swept through singles competition. Ricci rallied for a three-set victory at No. 1, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Avanesyan earned a straight-sets win at No. 3, while Florian Walcher controlled his match at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Ramirez Ocana pushed the Choctaws ahead with a three-set win at No. 5, and Cavalcanti de Carvalho picked up a win by retirement at No. 6.

Mississippi College will return to action next week in Florida, beginning with a matchup at Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. CT in Cocoa, Fla. The Choctaws will then face Saint Leo on Thursday, March 12, at 1 p.m. CT in Saint Leo, Fla.
