CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College men's and women's tennis programs picked up key Gulf South Conference victories on Monday afternoon, each cruising past Montevallo at the MC Tennis Complex.
On the men's side, the No. 30 Choctaws (11-7, 3-2 GSC) earned a 6-1 win over the Falcons (6-8, 3-4 GSC), taking the doubles point and dominating in singles play. Mississippi College claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, with Alex Benichou Blanchard and Rafael Sabio winning 6-4 on court one, and Alvaro Saint Martin and Sergio Ramirez Ocana cruising to a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles, the Choctaws were nearly perfect. Blanchard defeated Paul Sobich 6-4, 6-4 at the top spot, while Sabio, Florian Walcher, Gustavo Tedesco, and Saint Martin all posted straight-set wins. Ramirez Ocana sealed the dominant performance with a three-set win at No. 5, rallying for a 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 victory.
The No. 22 Mississippi College women's team (14-4, 4-1 GSC) mirrored the men's success, defeating Montevallo (8-6, 3-4 GSC) by a 6-1 margin.
After dropping the top doubles court, the Lady Choctaws rebounded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. Rocio Martinez and Anna Hudson secured a 6-4 win at No. 2, while Ann Cabot Stockett and Katharina Weber breezed to a 6-1 win at No. 3.
In singles, Emma Roberts led the way with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the top spot. Ana Julissa De Mata Rodríguez, Weber, Hudson, and Alizee Ripolles each added singles victories, with Ripolles clinching the sixth point in a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 win at No. 6.
The Choctaws are back in action Tuesday in Mobile, Ala., for a non-conference matchup against Spring Hill. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT
