CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College (5-3, 2-0 Gulf South) secured a 81-75 victory over Union University (4-3, 1-1 Gulf South) on Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum. This win marks the Choctaws' fourth consecutive home victory to start the year, bringing their home record to an impressive 4-0. Additionally, the team continues to dominate in conference play, improving to 2-0 in GSC contests. The Choctaws outscored Union by eight in the second half, capitalizing on a 16-for-17 performance from the free-throw line to clinch the win.
Mississippi College and Union University engaged in a tightly contested first half, with Union leading 38-36 at the break. The half saw five ties and three lead changes, emphasizing the back-and-forth nature of the game.
Marcel Bridges was a key contributor for the Choctaws, scoring with a layup at 18:02 and a dunk at 0:47, both assisted by
DeMarcus Powe. For Union, Terrence Ringo Jr. secured a crucial tip-in with 18 seconds remaining, putting his team ahead just before the end of the half.
Union built an early lead in the second half with Jamiir Allen's three-pointer at 18:58, extending their advantage to 41-38. Mississippi College responded with Powe scoring consistently, including a layup at 12:22 to narrow the gap to 57-53. The momentum shifted in the final minutes as MC tied the game at 75-75 with a layup by Powe at 2:24.
Phil Nelson's free throws at the 21-second mark sealed the 81-75 victory for The Blue and Gold, with Union unable to score in the closing seconds.
