MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Mississippi College (6-3, 3-0 Gulf South) secured a narrow 82-78 victory over Auburn University at Montgomery (2-7, 0-3 Gulf South) on Thursday at the AUM Athletics Complex. The Choctaws capitalized on free throws, converting 27-of-31 attempts, to maintain their lead in the closely contested matchup. This win marked a strong start for the Choctaws as they improved to 3-0 to start GSC play.
The opening half between the Choctaws and AUM was tightly contested, featuring multiple lead changes and ties. MC took an early lead with a pair of free throws by
Avaughn Johnson at the 18:43 mark, setting the tone for a balanced scoring attack.
DeMarcus Powe contributed significantly with a jumper and a fast-break three-pointer to help The Blue and Gold maintain momentum. AUM responded with a scoring surge, highlighted by Jayden Doyle's layup and free throw at 12:15, narrowing the gap. The half concluded with MC holding a slight edge, 32-30, after
Phil Nelson's fast-break layup in the final seconds.
The Choctaws secured their win with a strong second-half performance. Nelson played a key role, scoring eight points in a crucial stretch, including a fast-break layup and a 3-pointer that helped the visitors maintain their lead. Johnson and Powe contributed significantly from the free-throw line, combining for a series of successful attempts in the final minutes. Despite a late 3-pointer from Chappelle Whitney and a series of free throws by Marius Canery, AUM was unable to close the gap. MC outscored AUM 50-48 in the second half, sealing the win in a tense final minute.
