CLINTON, Miss. – In their second game under first-year head coach Mike Kershaw, Mississippi College showed signs of improvement but ultimately fell 27-7 to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
The Choctaws' lone score came from a standout 59-yard touchdown run by Preston Godfrey late in the first quarter, capping an 8-play, 95-yard drive that gave Mississippi College a brief 7-3 lead. Godfrey finished the night with 79 rushing yards on seven carries.
Quarterback Eli Anderson put up a solid performance, completing 13 of 17 passes for 84 yards. However, the Choctaws were unable to capitalize on their offensive momentum, being held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Texas A&M-Kingsville struck first with a 26-yard field goal from Gilbert Garza early in the first quarter. The Javelinas took control of the game, adding two touchdowns and a pair of field goals to secure the victory.
Mississippi College's defense fought hard, with standout performances from Braxton Hall, who contributed one pass breakup, and David Brown IV, who recorded six tackles, including two tackles for loss. Despite their efforts, the Choctaws fell to 0-2 on the season.
Mississippi College returns to action next week, opening Gulf South Conference play at home against North Greenville.
