Baseball Drops Series at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Mississippi College baseball team dropped the Gulf South Conference series at Auburn University at Montgomery as the Choctaws (9-5, 3-3 GSC) fell during the twinbill on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Warhawks (8-7, 4-2 GSC) rallied in both affairs to grab an 8-7 and 5-3 decisions.

Caleb Reese led the offensive charge for the Blue and Gold as the Bossier City, La., native had multiple-hit performances in both games. Reese tallied a team-best three hits in the opening game as the Choctaws collected 11 total in the game. He followed with two hits in the series finale. The senior drove in a pair of runs in both contests.

Reese took control of second all-time in home runs as he belted three on the day to surpass former Choctaw Blaine Crim (2016-19). His solo homer in the third inning of the second game of the series gave him second by himself and gave the Choctaws a 5-4 lead. He followed with a second, solo shot to start the scoring in the second game and added another in the sixth, which placed the Blue and Gold in front 6-1. His three home runs were a part of four on the afternoon for the team as JT Vance added a solo homer in the second game as well.

Vance, Beau Kirsch and Wesley Sides joined Reese with multiple hits in the first game of the day as Kirsch drove in a pair along with Korey Cooper. MC totaled 16 hits during the twinbill.

Jeff Liddell and Jack Bell were saddled with the setbacks on the bump. It marked the first loss for both hurlers. Liddell (0-1) tossed 2.1 frames in relief in the opener as he two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. Bell (0-1) surrendered two runs in just a third-of-an-inning out of the bullpen.

MC held a 4-0 advantage through the first three innings in the opener, but saw its lead dwindle and the Orange and Black deadlock the game at 4-all through four frames. Reese's first home run broke the stalemate and spearheaded the team to a 7-4 advantage, but AUM rallied once again and pulled within two runs at the conclusion of six frames. The Warhawks tied the contest again as Zach Drew was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Cooper Doughman delivered the game-winning hit with an RBI-single.

In the second outing, the Choctaws clung to a 2-0 lead through four and half innings. After AUM divided the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth, the Blue and Gold regained the two-run lead in the top of the sixth. The Warhawks tied the game as two runs scored on a fielding miscue and opened the door for a four-run inning and series-clinching victory.

Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 27 as it hosts Southern Arkansas in the final game of the month and the 12th home outing for the squad. First pitch at Frierson Field at Dickins-Scoper Stadium is 2 p.m.
