CLINTON, Miss. – The Mississippi College women's soccer team secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the University of West Alabama on Friday in Gulf South Conference action at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
Vail Wartes scored the lone goal of the match in the 36th minute, assisted by Parker St. Amant and Paula Catalan. Wartes' shot came from inside the box, giving the Choctaws a crucial edge as they aimed to strengthen their conference standing.
The Choctaws dominated possession throughout the match, outshooting the Tigers 13-4, with six of those attempts being on target. UWA's goalkeeper recorded five saves, but Wartes' goal proved to be the difference maker.
Defensively, Mississippi College held strong, allowing just four shots from West Alabama, with Jessi Carro making three saves to preserve the shutout. The Choctaws' backline limited the Tigers to only one shot in the first half, showcasing their control of the game.
In terms of team statistics, the Choctaws earned two corner kicks compared to West Alabama's six, and committed four fouls to the Tigers' four.
Mississippi College will return to action on Sunday, October 22, at 1 p.m. against the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The matchup is expected to be another competitive contest as the Choctaws look to build on their momentum from Friday's win.
