CLINTON, Miss. -- On Friday, Sept. 2, the Mississippi College men's and women's cross country teams will officially open up their seasons at The Opener, hosted by Mississippi College.
15 schools will attend, with action starting at 5:30 PM at Choctaw Trails.
Last year, both men's and women's teams took the team title, and the men took home the individual title.
The men took home the victory last year with a score of 17 points, with Gabe Poulin breaking the tape in a time of 15:24.30.
In that race one year ago, Poulin held off a hard-charging Cole Benoit, who took second place and also clocked in a time of 15:24.30.
The men's team top five averaged a 5K time of 15:28 and had a 1-5 spread of nine seconds. They placed eight inside of the top 10 finishers, as well as 15 inside of the top 20.
The women are coming off a win with a total tally of 26 points, with 5K and 6K school record holder Jazmin Hernandez leading the way for the Lady Choctaws.
The women's top five performers had a 5K average time of 19:34, as well as a 45-second 1-5 spread.
The men's and women's teams return six out of their top seven from last year's squad and will also showcase a talented freshman class.
"I am very excited to see the interaction of savy race tactics from the upper-classmen, and the genuine thrill of a first collegiate race from the newcomers on a beautiful cross country course", expressed head coach Matthew Reneker. "I can not think of a better place to be."
The women's race will go off at 5:30 PM, with men to follow at 6:00 PM.
