CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team avenged an earlier season setback as the Choctaws (7-12) topped Arkansas Tech University, 8-3, on Wednesday, March 9. The Wonder Boys (9-7) defeated the Navy and Gold in Russellville, Ark., on Feb. 8, 9-3.
Â
The victory is the second for the Choctaws in the series and the first ever at Frierson Field over the Green and Gold.
Â
Jackson Breedlove and
Lane Willis each recorded multiple hits in the contest. Breedlove logged a season-high three hits and drove in a team-best three runs to lead the way at the plate. Willis added a pair of knocks.
Caleb Reese joined Breedlove with a multi-RBI performance as he drove in two in his return to Frierson Field.
Â
Gavin LeBlanc (1-0) logged the win on the bump. The Morse, La., native gave up just one run in 3.1 frames out of the bullpen and struck out five.
Â
Following the midweek victory, MC returns to Gulf South Conference action on Sunday, March 13 as it travels to Montgomery, Ala., to face Auburn University at Montgomery in a three-game series. First pitch of the Sunday twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
After Tech plated a run in the top of the second, MC responded with RBI-singles from Breedlove and
Matthew Priest to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Wonder Boys tied the contest at 2-all in the top of the fourth.
Â
The Navy and Gold regained the lead in the home half of the fourth with a five-run frame headlined by a pair of two-RBI hits from Breedlove and Reese.
Lance Wade sandwiched a sacrifice fly between the two hits that scored Priest to total the largest, scoring inning of the season for the Choctaws.
Â
Woogie Lee added the final blow for MC in the eighth with a solo home run to left field to regain the five-run lead following a Tech run in the top of the seventh. The solo homer ties the Southaven, Miss., native for tops on the team in category aside
Ken Scott.
Â
MC starter
Payton Russell allowed just one hit in 3.2 frames of action, but surrendered two runs.
David Dunn scattered a pair of hits, but did not allow a run in his two innings of relief on the bump.
Â
Grant Shahan (0-2) took the loss for ATU. He gave up seven runs, but only one earned, on six hits in four innings in the start. Austin Terrell paced the squad at the plate with a pair of hits coming off the bench.
