Choctaws Edged at Miles

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Mississippi College baseball team sees a four-run lead evaporate as Miles College rallied with six runs in the last two innings to claim a 6-5 win at Historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala., on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Grant Barber, Blaine Crim, Billy Cameron and Brandon Broussard each recorded two hits to lead the team at the plate. Chauncey Callier and Hunter Sykes joined Crim and Cameron with a RBI in the contest. MC totaled 10 hits in the contest.
 
Christian Bellew (1-1) suffered his first loss on the mound. Bellew allowed one run – unearned – on one walk and two strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Sykes plated the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, the Choctaws tacked on three runs in the seventh to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Crim started the scoring in the seventh with a double to right field that scored Barber, who reached on a lead-off walk. After Cameron singled to push Crim to third, Crim scored on a Callier sac fly.
  • Miles took its first lead of the game in the eighth as it used four hits, an error and miscues to take a 5-4 lead.
  • Cameron tied the contest at 5-all in the top of the ninth with a lead-off home run to left field.
  • Roderick Ransom led off the Golden Bears' ninth as he was hit by a pitch. After Ransom stole second, he advanced to third on a throwing error and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Mississippi College sent seven hurlers to the mound in the contest. Starter Ryan Lane tossed four innings with two hits and four strikeouts.
  • Austin Chastang, Brandon Kennedy and Tim Holloway combined for three innings of work with two hits allowed (Kennedy, Holloway) and two strikeouts (Kennedy, Holloway).
  • Stephen Atkins and Dustan Dille combined to pitch the eighth. Atkins allowed three runs on one hit with two walks while Dille surrendered two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
 
NOTEABLES
  • Cameron's home run was his fifth of the season and 10th of his career. The five home runs leads the team and is tied for fourth in the Gulf South Conference.
  • The Choctaws left 11 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth.
  • The setback snaps a four-game win streak over the Golden Bears in series history.
 
NEXT UP
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, March 16 as it travels to Cleveland, Tenn., to face Lee University in a GSC series. First pitch of Saturday's twinbill is slated for 2 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday, March 17 at 1 p.m.
