Women's Basketball Preview: Shorter, at Delta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20 as it hosts Shorter University. The game is the first of two this week for the Lady Choctaws. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
 
MC closes out the week on Saturday, Feb. 23 at in-state foe Delta State University. Tip-off in Cleveland, Miss., at Walter Sillers Coliseum is marked for 2 p.m.

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE NOTES/PREVIEW
 
• Mississippi College looks to rebound after falling on the road against Valdosta State and West Florida over the weekend.
 
• A trio of Lady Choctaws scored in double figures at Valdosta State led by Jamilah Sanders with 16 points. Kaitlyn Thompson chimed in a season-high 11 points while Zariah Matthews added 10 points. Sheriff grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
 
• Lauran Sheriff led the Navy and Gold with 12 points at West Florida. Sanders paced the squad on the glass with six boards.
 
• Zariah Matthews leads Mississippi College in scoring this season. The junior averages 10.7 points per game this season. A trio of Lady Choctaws sit behind Matthews outside the double figure scoring. Jamilah Sanders averages 9.8 points followed by Coco Hobson with 9.7. Lauran Sheriff averages 9.2 points per contest. Hobson leads the team in rebounds with 6.8.
 
• Zariah Matthews ranks second in the Gulf South Conference in free throw percentage. The Bogue Chitto, Miss., native is shooting 82.2 percent from the stripe this season. Delta State's Nia Johnson leads the GSC connecting on 61-of-73 for 83.6 percent.
 
• Zan Ratcliffe ranks among the leaders in the conference in assists leaders. The Taylorsville, Miss., product averages 2.9 assists per game, which ranks eighth in the conference.
 
• Lauran Sheriff and Kirsten Thompson are listed among the top five in the league in blocked shots. Both are averaging just shy of a block per game.
 
• This marks the first meeting between Mississippi College and Shorter this season. The two teams last contest came on Jan. 22, 2018, an 83-63, Shorter win in Rome. The Lady Choctaws are 2-1 against SU in Clinton in series history.
 
• Shorter comes into the game on Wednesday looking for its first win in the GSC this season and its second win overall. The Hawks only victory this season came on Nov. 24, 2018 against Trevecca Nazarene on SU's home floor, 65-64.
 
• A trio of Hawks led the team in scoring paced by Raven Fair with 13.7 points per game. Jasmine Gaines sits second on the squad with 13.2 points followed by Tatum Ragsdale with 10.3. Fair also leads the Blue and White with 7.2 rebounds per contest.
 
• The meeting with Delta State marks the second this season. DSU pulled off a 57-51 win in Clinton on Dec. 15. MC looks for its first win in Cleveland since Jan. 19, 1994. The Lady Statesmen have claimed the last eight games on its home floor. The Lady Choctaws last win in the series came on Dec. 1, 2016 in Clinton.
 
• Delta State comes into Saturday with a 16-9 record and 11-7 in the GSC following a 70-66 win at Valdosta State on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Lady Statesmen have won six of their last eight.

• Nia Johnson and Quantesha Patterson lead the Green and White in scoring. Johnson paces the squad with 14.3 points per game followed by Patterson with 11.0 points. Frederica Haywood leads DSU on the glass with 8.8 boards. Patterson ranks second on the team in rebounds with 7.3.

MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
