CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College has jumped out to a lead in the Gulf South Conference Overall All-Sports standings following the fall season, it was announced on Thursday (Dec. 12).
"This is a testament to the hard work by each of our fall sports coaches and student-athletes this year," said athletic director
Mike Jones. "It's an exciting time to be a part of MC Athletics, and I'm looking forward to the winter and spring sports keeping that momentum going."
The Overall All-Sports Trophy counts all sports that a school sponsors. Regular season finish (standings) count towards 75% of the final overall rank and tournament finish counts at 25%. The Choctaws and Lady Choctaws totaled 52.250 points and lead second-place West Florida (43.750) and third-place Lee (43.250).
The lead can be attributed to each one of the fall sports qualifying for their postseason tournament (where one is held), and the football team tying for 4th in the final GSC standings. The men's and women's cross country teams both finished 3rd at the GSC Championships in 2019.
Both the men's and women's soccer teams won the GSC regular season title and advanced to the semi-finals of their conference tournaments, while the volleyball team also qualified for their first conference tournament since 2009 and their first GSC Tournament since 1994.
In addition to leading the Overall All-Sports Trophy standings, both the men's and the women's teams hold a lead over the rest of the GSC. The Choctaws racked up 25.875 total points to hold a lead over second-place Lee (19.750), while the Lady Choctaws tallied 26.375 points to hold an advantage over second-place Montevallo (26.250).
The standings will be updated following the winter and fall seasons with the Overall All-Sports Trophy being handed out at the Gulf South Conference summer meetings.
