Women's Hoops Preview: UAH, Lee

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 31 as it travels to Huntsville, Ala., to face the University of Alabama in Huntsville at Spragins Hall. Tip-off  is set for 5:30 p.m. The Lady Choctaws close out the two-game, Gulf South Conference weekend, road trip on Saturday, Feb. 2 as it travels to Cleveland, Tenn., for a 1 p.m. central start against Lee University.

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE NOTES / PREVIEW
•    Deja vu as Mississippi College faces Lee and Alabama-Huntsville for the second straight weekend. MC fell in both contests to the Lady Flames and Chargers this past weekend in Clinton. The rematch with UAH is the second in a seven-day span while the follow-up with Lee is the second in nine days.
•    Freshman Lindsey Vaughn tied a season-high with 11 points in the loss against UAH. Vaughn's scoring total equaled her total against LeMoyne-Owen earlier this season and is her second game in double figures this season.
•    Sophomore Lauran Sheriff led MC in scoring in both contests this past week. The Jackson, Miss., native scored a team-best 12 points in the contest with Lee and followed up a team-leading 16 points against UAH.
•    Mississippi College looks to snap a three-game slide to UAH. The Chargers hold a 9-4 advantage in the series with the Navy and Gold. MC's last win in the series came on Jan. 28, 2017 - a 63-58 contest in Huntsville. The Lady Choctaws are 2-5 against UAH in Spragins Hall. MC seeks its first win in the series with Lee. The Lady Flames have won all eight meetings against the Lady Choctaws.
•    Following the setback to UAH on Saturday, the Lady Choctaws are 1-1 against schools this season that have a horse in its logo. MC picked up an 81-79 overtime decision at Southern Arkansas on Dec 31.
•    After Thursday's contest against Lee, Mississippi College stands at 4-2 against schools from the State of Tennessee this season. MC has two wins over Christian Brothers and a win each against Lane College and LeMoyne-Owen College. The two losses came against Union and Lee.
•    Junior Zariah Matthews leads a trio of Lady Choctaws in scoring this season. Matthews' paces the team with 11.1 points per game. Lauran Sheriff and Coco Hobson sit just behind their Bogue Chitto, Miss., teammate with 10.5 and 10.4 points per contest respectively.
•    Zariah Matthews ranks second in the GSC this season in free throw percentage. Matthews is shooting 82.8 percent on the campaign as she's connected on 53-of-64 in 17 games. Nia Johnson from Delta State leads the league in the category with 85.7 percent. Johnson's 48 for 56 in 19 contests.
•    UAH enters the contest on Thursday with an 8-9 record and 6-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Aryn Sanders and Baylee Johnson each scored 20-plus points in its win over MC. Sanders paced the squad with 22 points and added 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and her sixth game with 20-plus points this season. Johnson added 21 points while Holly Harris supplied 13 points. Johnson finished one rebound shy of a double-double.
•    Lee comes into the contest with a 16-4 record and 10-2 in the conference after falling 57-36 at Delta State on Saturday, Jan. 26. The 36 points was the fewest scored by the Lady Flames this season. 
•    Becca Cheeks scored a team-best 12 points in the Lady Flames 10-point win over MC on Thursday. Abby Bertram added 11 points with 10 coming from Taylor Boggess. Cheeks also totaled a team-best six boards.
Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
