Women's Basketball Preview: West Florida, UAH

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team returns to the hardwood this week with a pair of Gulf South Conference contests. MC opens the week on Wednesday, Feb. 14 as it hosts the University of West Florida in the final home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. The Lady Choctaws close out the week on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.

THE SERIES
  • Mississippi College and West Florida meet for the 10th time in series history. UWF leads the series 6-3 and is riding a six-game win streak over the Lady Choctaws. MC's last win in the series came on Dec. 18, 2014 at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
  • Mississippi College and UAH square off for the 11th time in program history with UAH leading the series 7-4. The Chargers claimed the last meeting earlier this season with a 75-70 win in Clinton ending a two-game win streak for the Navy and Gold in the series. 

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE NOTES
  • Mississippi College looks to rebound from a 72-58 loss at the University of West Alabama on Saturday. Two Lady Choctaws scored in double figures led by Zariah Matthews with 18 points. Lauran Sheriff added 12 points for the Navy and Gold.
  • Matthews posted double figures for the second straight contest and the ninth time this season. The Bogue Chitto, Miss., native finished one shy of matching her career-high. Matthews also became the first Lady Choctaw with five-plus steals this season as she tallied a career-high five against West Alabama.
  • Sheriff has scored in double-digits in 16 games this season and five of her last six.
  • Matthews has led MC in scoring in the last five outings as the sophomore is averaging 11.8 points. Sheriff sits second on the team in scoring during the span with 9.4 points per game and has grabbed 6.8 rebounds per contest. The freshman ranks second on the team this season in scoring averaging 10.3 points.
  • Kelley Allen leads the team in scoring this season with 12.8 points per outing and averages 9.2 boards, which is second in the GSC. Ieisha Lacey ranks third on the team in scoring with 10.2 points per game.
  • Mississippi College ranks third in the GSC in assists per game with 15.0 and stands fifth in block shots per game with 3.17.
  • Wednesday marks the final home game for Shuntavia Rodgers, Olivia Mabry and Kelley Allen. The three players were honored on Saturday, Feb. 3 with their Senior Day.

WEST FLORIDA NOTES
  • West Florida fell 73-53 at West Georgia last Saturday. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Argonauts. UWF shot 30 percent and was outscored 27-11 in the second quarter in the contest. 
  • Shaniqua Magee was the only player to score in double figures for UWF as she finished with 10 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Courtney Meyer had nine points and eight rebounds.
  • Meyer leads the GSC in rebounds with 11.0 per game. She stands as the only player in the conference to average double-digits in boards.
  • West Florida sits in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference standings. The Argos are deadlocked with West Georgia and West Alabama. The top eight team earn a berth to the GSC Tournament. Delta State and Christian Brothers sit just back of the trio sporting 8-9 records.

UAH NOTES
  • UAH is 12-12 on the season entering the week, including a 6-11 mark in conference play.
  • The Chargers are coming off an 80-46 loss at nationally-ranked North Alabama on Saturday and were led by Chandler Elder, who logged a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She also added three blocks and two steals in the setback.
  • Elder leads the Blue and White in scoring this season with 12.2 points per game. Chandler also paces UAH on the glass with 8.2 rebounds per contest. Katie Speegle ranks second on the team in scoring with 12.1 points.
