Men's Basketball Preview: Southern Arkansas

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will face their first road test of the season on Tuesday night when they travel to Magnolia, Ark. to face Southern Arkansas at 7:00 p.m. in W.T. Watson Center.

SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE

The Choctaws are led by 15th-year head coach Don Lofton, who has posted a career record of 215-156 (.580). He is joined on the bench by first-year assistant coach Alex Ainsworth and former Choctaw Otis Harvey as a graduate assistant.

On Saturday afternoon, the Choctaws picked up a 78-73 victory over previously unbeaten Henderson State in Clinton. Senior Marcus Lytle scored a season-high 22 points, while junior Tre Jenkins poured in 21, hitting 7-of-10 three pointers.

The Choctaws shot 51% from the field and 40% from the three-point line, also dishing out 20 assists on 30 made baskets. Senior Donovan Ham added 15 points and seven rebounds in the victory.
 

SCOUTING SOUTHERN ARKANSAS

The Muleriders are led by 7th-year head coach Andy Sharpe, who has compiled a career record of 82-88 (.482) at SAU. He is joined on the bench by assistant coaches David Anderson and Ted Waller.

SAU has won three straight games since a season-opening loss to Augustana (SD). They have won each of their last two games by 27 points or more, including a 93-66 victory over Paul Quinn on Saturday.

Gabe Gilliam came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points, while Devante Brooks had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
 

GAME NOTES

This will be the 14th all-time meeting between the two schools with MC holding a 7-6 edge in the series.

Last season, the Muleriders came to Clinton and MC picked up a 66-63 victory. Brandon Boston led the Choctaws with 16 points and eight rebounds in the win.

The Choctaws are only 2-5 when the two teams match up in Magnolia.

The last time the Choctaws won their first road game of the season was when they traveled across town to defeat Belhaven (83-75) on November 25, 2014.
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2018-19 academic year.
