Men's Basketball Preview: Auburn Montgomery, West Georgia

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will face their first repeat Gulf South Conference opponents of the 2017-18 season as Auburn Montgomery and West Georgia come to A.E. Wood Coliseum.

MC and AUM will face off on Thursday night with a tip time of 7:30 p.m., while the Choctaws and Wolves will meet on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
 

THE SERIES

This will be the 4th all-time meeting between the Choctaws and Warhawks with MC winning all three. MC and AUM met in Montgomery back on December 18th with MC coming away with a 95-84 overtime victory. Leito Holloway scored a team-high 20 points, while Stacey Mack added 19 as the Choctaws went 6-of-6 from the floor in the extra period.

This will be the 27th allt-time meeting between the Choctaws and Wolves with MC holding a 17-9 edge in the series. The teams met back on December 16th with the Wolves grabbing a 93-82 win in Carrollton. Leito Holloway tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for MC, while Marquill Smith (27/12) and Paul Turner (26/11) combined for 53 points and 23 rebounds.
 

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE (9-9, 6-7 GSC)

MC is coming off a tough 74-62 loss to Delta State on Saturday, snapping a two-game winning streak. Sophomore Brandon Boston (13.9 ppg) tallied his second double-double of the season with 25 pionts and a career-high 18 rebounds in the setback.

Junior Donovan Ham (14.8 ppg) is the team's leading scorer, also pulling down 6.4 rebounds with 2.9 assists per game. Boston leads the team with 6.8 boards per game and is shooting 55% from the field.

Senior Antonio Johnson (12.4 ppg) is shooting 39% from the three-point line and 88% from the foul line while leading the team with 4.5 assists per game and 21 total steals.
 

AUBURN MONTGOMERY (8-13, 4-9 GSC)

The Warhakws, led by 4th-year head coach Michael Cheaney, are looking to snap a three-game losing streak, falling to Tuskegee in a non-conference battle on Tuesday night. AUM shot just 39% from the floor and went 5-of-24 from the three-point line.

Reagan Eubanks (15.9 ppg) is the team's leading scorer, pouring in a season-high 26 on Tuesday against Tuskegee. Desmond DeRamus (15.4 ppg) is just five points shy of 1,000 for his career and leads the team with 4.4 assists per contests.

Lafayette James-Core (13.0 ppg) and Darrion Taylor (10.4 ppg) are also averaging double-figure scoring thi season with James-Core shooting a team-high 47% from the three-point line. Jarrett Croff (8.6 ppg) leads the team with 5.4 rebounds per contest and has a team-best 17 blocked shots.
 

WEST GEORGIA (9-11, 4-9 GSC)

The Wolves, led by 10th-year head coach Michael Cooney, are two games out of the final spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament with seven games remaining. In their last outing, they fell to Montevallo at home by a score of 81-73. Marquill Smith (21.8 ppg) led the way with 26 points and eight rebounds, while Aren Ulmer (4.8 ppg) had a team-best six assists.

UWG ranks 2nd in the league in scoring offense (86.1 ppg) but are 13th in scoring defense (87.4 ppg). Smith and Paul Turner (19.2 ppg) are a nice 1-2 punch for the Wolves, averaging 41.0 points per game. William Sides (16.6 ppg) is also scoring in double-figures and is second on the team with 37 assists behind Ulmer (89).
 

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is recently finished their transition process back to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference and will be competing for conference and national championships in the 2016-17 academic year.
