CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College led the Gulf South Conference with 95 student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll, including nine earning spots on the All-Academic Teams, it was announced on Thursday (January 18).
Academic All-GSCÂ Teams are selected by the Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be a freshman or first-semester or quarter transfers.
The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
Football (
Kaleb Coleman,
Lawrence Guyot and
Chris Manning) and Men's Soccer (
Horacio Gutierrez Jr.,
Connor Johnson and
Marco Profumo) led the way with three selections each, while Women's Soccer (
Caitlin Hayes and
Andrea McDonald) and Men's Cross Country (
Will Young) rounded out the honorees for MC.
The Choctaws and Lady Choctaws also had a conference-high 94 student-athletes named to the GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll. Qualification for the Honor Roll is automatic based on at least 3.00 grade-point-average and does not require a voting process.
Overall, there were 980 student-athletes named to the GSC Academic Honor Roll from around the league. Women's Soccer had a conference-high 248 student-athletes honored, while football was next with 208.
