Mullis' Pitching Performance Leads Choctaws to Twinbill Split

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team split a Friday doubleheader with the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The Choctaws claimed the night cap of the twinbill with a 3-0 victory after falling 18-7 in the opener.
 
The rubber match is scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 15. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
 
KEY STATS (Game 2)
  • Hunter Mullis (4-3) struck out a season-high 12 batters in the complete-game, shutout win over the Chargers. The total surpassed a previous mark of 10 set against Shorter in a no decision.
  • Hunter Wilson, Blaine Crim and Grant Barber combined for the Choctaws' six hits as the trio each logged multiple game efforts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A masterful pitching performance from Mullis set the tone for the game.
  • Wilson scored the first run of the game in the third inning as he swiped home to give MC the only run it needed in the contest.
  • The Choctaws added two runs in the fifth as Wilson scored on a wild pitch and Barber logged the only RBI of the game with a single through the left side to score Blaine Crim.
 
KEY STATS (Game 1)
  • Chance Whitten and Will Elliott each totaled a multiple hit performance for the Navy and Gold in the opening game. Whitten also led the team in RBI with three while Crim chimed in two.
  • Hunter Lacefield (3-3) took the loss on the mound with 2.0 innings of work in the start. Lacefield allowed four runs on two hits with four walks in the contest.
  • The MC pitching staff combined for 11 walks in the contest.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After MC took an early 1-0 lead in its first trip to the plate, the Chargers posted a total of seven runs in the second and third to take a 7-1 lead. Wright Hackett started the scoring for the Blue and White with a two-run, double in the second inning to spark the scoring effort.
  • Crim provided a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to pull the Choctaws within 7-3, but AJ Walden responded in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer of his own to give UAH back its six-run lead.
  • MC added three runs in the fourth and another in the sixth, but it wasn't enough as UAH posted a seven-run, ninth to capture the first game of the series.
