Women's Basketball Preview: Valdosta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team looks to clinch a season sweep against Valdosta State University in Gulf South Conference action as the Lady Choctaws (5-13, 3-12 GSC) host VSU on Thursday, Feb. 4. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
 
The Series
Thursday marks 25th meeting between Mississippi College and Valdosta State with the Blazers leading the series 15-9. MC snapped a two-game skid against VSU earlier this season on Dec. 19 with a 68-63 win in Valdosta. It marked the first win at VSU since Feb. 13, 1993 and the first win for the Lady Choctaws in the series since Mar. 3, 1995 - the last time the two teams met prior to the renewal during the 2014-15 season.
 
Lady Choctaw Leaders
A trio of Lady Choctaws are averaging double figures led by Kristen Sampson's 14.8 points per game. Chloe Roberts and Carla Clemmons join Sampson in averaging double-digits this season. Roberts sits second on the team with 14 points per contest while Clemmons is averaging 12.4 points this season. On the glass, Toni Woods leads the squad. The junior is averaging 7.5 boards per outing followed by Clemmon's 6.3 rebounds.
 
Breaking Down the Blazers
Valdosta State enters the Thursday tilt with an even 10-10 record on the season and 6-9 in the Gulf South Conference. The Blazers went 1-1 last weekend after falling 54-46 against Lee last Saturday. The Red and Black opened the weekend swing with a 77-67 win over Shorter – which snapped a two-game skid. VSU is 1-6 away from its home floor this season and winless in conference play away from The Complex. Madi Mitchell and Aaliyah Cheatham pace the Blazers in scoring. Mitchell leads the way with 10.5 points per game while Cheatham is second averaging 10.1 points. Maggie Davis guides the efforts on the glass with 6.1 rebounds per contest. Mitchell and Cheatham rank second and third respectively behind Davis with 4.6 and 4.0 boards per outing.
 
Sampson Among Top Scorers in Program History
Kristen Sampson has moved into the top 50 among all-time scorers in Mississippi College history. In her two seasons, 44 games, in Clinton, the senior has compiled 585 points – which places her 44th among leading scorers. The Jackson, Miss., native is the first to crack the top 50 list since Ebony Williams in 2013. Williams compiled 520 points from 2011-13 as she ranks 50th. Sampson is 22 points away from moving into the top 40 on the list.
 
Clemmons Among All-Time, Single-Season Blocks Leaders
With three blocks against Union, junior Carla Clemmons has tallied 33 rejections this season moving her into the top 10 among single season leaders in school history. She stands one block away from climbing into the top 5.
 
Long Range Danger
Kristen Sampson and Allie Hill have proven to be dangerous from behind the arc as the duo ranks in the top 10 in 3-point field percentage. Sampson is sixth all-time with a 36.5 clip from behind the arc in just two seasons with MC. The Jackson, Miss., native is seventh in 3-point field goals made with 54 and is seventh in attempts with 148.
Hill is eighth in program history shooting 34.2 percent from the 3-point line. The Plainfield, Ill., product is four 3-pointers made away from cracking the top 10 as she currently has 40.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 against West Florida. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
