CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball hits the road for a Gulf South Conference road swing to close out the 2015 portion of the slate. The first stop on the road trip comes at the University of West Florida on Thursday, Dec. 17. Tip-off in Pensacola, Fla., is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Choctaws (2-5, 0-4 GSC) look to snap a five-game skid at UWF and improve their record against the Argos. MC holds a 3-1 advantage in the series after dropping its last meeting at West Florida, a 74-53 decision on Feb. 7, 2015.
"West Florida is always athletic and tough defensively. A year ago, we beat West Florida here and lost to them at their place," said head coach
Paul Allen Duke. "We're beating ourselves right now with turnovers, rebounds, etc. That could be due to inexperience and not playing together. We've got to be more poised overall as a team whether we're up or down in the ball game."
The Navy and Gold picked up career outings on the glass from
Carla Clemmons,
Toni Woods and
Khadijah Jones in a 63-59 setback to Christian Brothers on Saturday, Dec. 12. Woods, who leads the team with 8.4 rebounds per game, paced the squad with 15 rebounds while Jones added seven.
Clemmons grabbed 10 boards to go along with her 17 points to record her first double-double of the season. The trio combined for 32 of the team's season-best 47 rebounds in the game. The Rome, Ga., native ranks second on the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game and rebounds with 6.6 boards.
Chloe Roberts, the team's leading scorer through seven games with 16.3 points per game, joined Clemmons in double-digit scoring with 13 points against CBU.
Kristen Sampson ranks third on the team in scoring averaging 12.9 points.
Entering the Thursday tilt, Mississippi College looks to continue its impressive run in blocked shots. The Lady Choctaws have recorded 34 rejections this, which ranks in the top 50 nationally and leads the GSC, while 4.9 blocks per game ranks in the top 15. Clemmons leads the squad with 18 placing her in the top 25 in Division II.
"Our whole team, the defensive numbers are starting to drop, especially in opponent's points per game," Duke said. "Carla is getting better as a defensive player. Her technique has given her the ability to improve in that aspect of her game. She anticipates well and her presence inside is getting better and that will help us as we move along."
UWF is 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in GSC play following a 59-56 win at Shorter on Monday evening. The Argos are 2-1 on its home floor this season, including a split in its two conference outings. Katie Bobos leads UWF as the junior is averaging 12.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Toni Brewer and Jasmine Wigfall join Bobos in double figure scoring. Brewer is averaging 11 points while Wigfall averages 10.9 points per game.
Following the Thursday matchup, Mississippi College concludes the pre-Christmas slate on Saturday, Dec. 19 as the squad travels to Valdosta State University. Tip-off in Valdosta, Ga., is slated for 1 p.m. central.
