Women's Basketball Preview: Delta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team will renew their rivalry with Delta State University on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

This will be the 50th all-time meeting between the two teams, but the first since the 1995-96 season, MC's last year in Division II and the Gulf South Conference. The Lady Statesmen hold a 45-4 edge in the series and are on a current six-game winning streak. The last win for the Lady Choctaws in the series came in the 1993-94 season, an 83-71 victory.

Head coach Paul Allen Duke earned his 336th win on Saturday, December 13th against Christian Brothers, marking the 700th win in program history, dating back to 1970. Duke is the winningest coach in school history and has the highest winning percentage (.680). He is slated to coach his 500th career game this season with the game against West Alabama on January 24th projected to be the milestone.

The Lady Choctaws struggled offensively in their last game, falling to Lee at home, 66-44. The Lady Flames opened up a 17-3 lead in the opening minutes and never led by fewer than 10 points the rest of the game. MC got their offense going in the second half, opening the period by making 6-of-7 shots from the field. Senior AnnMarie Harris led the Lady Choctaws with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Junior Kristen Sampson is the team's leading scorer with 12.3 points per game. She has scored in double-figures in all but four games this season, but had just six points in the loss to Lee on Monday. Junior Ashley Minor is also scoring in double-figures with 11.9 points per game and has scored at least 10 in seven of her last eight contests.

Harris has picked up her game over the last two outings, averaging 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, while going 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Junior Allie Hill leads the team with 30 assists, while senior Lauren Bethly is just behind with 26 and Sampson has 25. Minor leads the team with 35 steals, including an MC-record 10 in a victory over GSC-leading West Florida.

The Lady Statesmen are led by long-time GSC coach, Craig Roden. While in just his first year at DSU, he has spent 18 years in the conference with stints at West Georgia and, most recently, West Alabama. Since opening the season at 3-5, the Lady Statesmen have won 5-of-6, including four straight. Last time out, they hold Shorter to just 24% shooting in a 58-36 victory. DSU leads the GSC by allowing just 54.8 points per game.

Junior Chelsey Rhodes leads the team with 14.1 points per game, including a season-high 30 in a 76-46 victory over Valdosta State. Senior Rhandi Ball also scores in double-figures with 11.9 points per game, shooting 47% from the field with a team-high 34 steals. Senior Seneca Walton leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game to go along with 9.3 ppg.
