CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team will look to rebound from their first loss of the season when they host the University of West Georgia at 2:00 p.m.
on Saturday in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
This will be the 9th all-time meeting between the two teams with UWG holding a 6-2 edge in the series. The Lady Choctaws are 2-2 at home against the Wolves, but the schools have not played since the 1992-93 season when West Georgia grabbed a 67-62 win in Carrollton, Ga.
Head coach
Paul Allen Duke earned his 335th victory on November 22nd against Selma. He is the winningest coach in school history and has the highest winning percentage (.686).
The Lady Choctaws have six straight home games to start their first season back in Division II and the Gulf South Conference. They opened with four victories before dropping Thursday's game to West Alabama, 50-40.
MC shot just 10-of-49 (20%) from the field on Thursday night, but they have held each of their opponents to less than 50 points over the first five games. The Lady Choctaws' field goal defense is 30%, which would rank 9th in the country.
Three Lady Choctaws are averaging in double-figures led by junior
Kristen Sampson (12.8 ppg), who was MC's only player with 10 points against UWA. Senior
AnnMarie Harris (10.6 ppg) also leads the team with 10.8 rebounds per game, while sophomore
Zaneta Kubicka has a team-high 11 blocked shots.
The Wolves come into Saturday's contest off a 60-49 victory at Delta State on Thursday night. Taylor Beverly led the way for UWG with 22 points and 17 rebounds, going 10-of-15 from the free throw line. Marion Lemonnnier (11 pts) and Nicole Fasick (10 pts) were also in double-figures.
The Wolves' only loss of the season came on November 25th against Georgia College (64-62). They are led by Seandre Lee with 17.0 ppg, while Beverly averages 15.6 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. Lemonnier (11.0 ppg) also averages in double-figures while shooting 13-of-37 (.351) from the 3-point line.
