MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team will close out their first road trip of the season on Saturday when they face Christian Brothers Universitiy at 2:00 p.m. in Canale Arena.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools despite being fewer than four driving hours apart. CBU joined the Gulf South Conference after MC had left during the 1996-97 season.
Head coach
Paul Allen Duke earned his 335th victory on November 22nd against Selma. He is the winningest coach in school history and has the highest winning percentage (.684).
The next victory for the Lady Choctaws will be the 700th in school history, dating back to the 1970 season. Coach Duke is also slated to coach his 500th career game this season. Currently, the game at West Alabama on January 24th is the projected date for the milestone.
The Lady Choctaws made a valiant comeback attempt on Thursday night at Union. Trailing by 16 points in the opening minutes of the second half, MC went on a 12-2 run to cut the score to 60-54 with 10 minutes remaining. However, the Lady Bulldogs would go on an 18-2 run of their own and pick up the 79-60 victory.
Junior
Kristen Sampson leads the team with 12.7 points per game and had one of her best games of the season on Thursday night. She scored 18 points, going 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from the three-point line. Sampson also led the team with five rebounds and five assists. As a team, MC shot 42% (8-of-19) from behind the arc, their best performance of the season.
Junior
Allie Hill had a big night for the Lady Choctaws, racking up a season-high 10 points while going 3-of-7 from the three-point line. Junior
Ashley Minor chipped in 10 points off the bench, while junior
Deizarae McCoy tied a season-high with six points.
The Lady Bucs are led by seconnd-year head coach Sarah Condra and are coming off an upset win over Delta State on Thursday night, 61-40. CBU held the Lady Statesmen to 36% shooting from the field and 0-of-7 from the three-point line. Breanna Ridgell led the team with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Ridgell leads the team with 18.5 points per game while shooting 10-of-19 (53%) from the three-point line. She and Courtney Banks each played all 40 minutes on Thursday night, and the two are averaging in double-figure scoring with Banks at 10.3 ppg.
