CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team will travel for their final two road games of the season this weekend when they face Shorter on Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CT) and Lee on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
The Choctaws (7-4, 2-3 GSC) have won four of their last six matches with the two losses coming in overtime, including a 2-1, double-overtime defeat to Christian Brothers on Sunday afternoon. On Friday afternoon, MC scored two goals in the final four minutes to come back for a 5-4 victory over Union University.
Senior
Brian Vasquez leads an offensive attack that has seen 11 different players score 26 goals this season. Vasquez has tallied five goals with 11 assists, tying a career-high for helpers in a season. Senior
Stephen Roberson leads the team with seven goals, while senior
Francisco DeAnda has three scores, including the game-winner in the final minutes against Union.
The MC defense, led by junior
Josh Barrera, has posted a 1.86 goals against average in 11 matches. Freshman goalkeeper
Humberto Pelaez has started nine matches in net, making 35 saves with a 1.90 GAA.
The Hawks (3-7-1, 2-2 GSC) have lost two straight matches to Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama after picking up victories over Spring Hill (3-0) and West Florida (2-1). Shorter has been impressive in home matches this season, going 3-1, while they are just 0-3-1 in road matches.
The offense has scored just 10 goals, led by Irvin Espinal with four scores. Charlie Dennis and Fernando De Barros have a team-high four assists on the year. Nicolas Ferrigno has played every minute in net for the Hawks, posting a 1.65 goals against average with 46 saves and one shutout.
The Flames (6-4-2, 1-2-1 GSC) have lost two straight matches to West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville after pitching three straight shutouts. Lee has not allowed more than two goals in a match this season and have allowed just two goals twice. Lee is 5-1-1 at home this season with an 0-3-1 mark on the road.
David Perez and Quade Marinell have scored 11 of the team's 22 goals this season, while Marinell has a team-high six assists. Goalkeeper Tom Halsall has played all but 11 minutes in net for the Flames this season, posting a 0.80 goals against average with 56 saves and three shutouts.
This will be the first-ever meeting between MC and Shorter, while the Choctaws and the Flames played in the NCCAA Mid-East Regional last season and Lee came away with a 2-1 overtime win in Campbellsville, Ky.
