Bucs Outlast Choctaws in Double Overtime, 2-1

CLINTON, Miss. --- For the second time this season, the Mississippi College men's soccer team and Christian Brothers needed extra time to settle a tightly contested match. On Sunday afternoon, CBU came away with a 2-1 victory in double overtime, avenging the earlier loss to the MC on September 22nd.

The Choctaws (7-4, 2-3 GSC) got on the board first when senior Stephen Roberson scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season on an assist from senior Brian Vasquez. For Vasquez, it was his 11th assist of the season, tying a career-high he set in his freshman year. It was also his 34th career helper, which is the best mark in school history.

The two teams would go into the half with MC leading, but the Bucs (9-2, 5-1 GSC) equalized the match in the 72nd minute when Devon Jackson was left open in the box, scoring his second goal of the season on an assist from Kevin Tikhomiroff.

Back on September 22nd, the Choctaws and the Bucs went into the overtime periods in a scoreless tie before Roberson scored in 97th minute to pick up the win. On Sunday, the teams needed a second overtime, and Samuel Wilson clinched the win with a header off a free kick from Diego Silva Vieira.

The match was heated from the start as the two teams combined for 33 fouls, 20 of which were called on CBU. MC had 20 shots to 19 for the Bucs.

Despite the loss, freshman Humberto Pelaez made five saves in net for the Choctaws. Britton McGuire made seven saves for the Bucs, earning the victory.

The Choctaws will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Rome, Ga. to face Shorter University at 3:00 p.m.
