CLINTON, Miss. — In a match that came down to the final court under the lights, No. 7 Mississippi College defeated No. 4 West Alabama, 4-3, on Wednesday to remain unbeaten and clinch the Gulf South Conference regular season championship.
The Choctaws improved to a perfect 20-0 on the season, securing the program's first GSC regular season title in dramatic fashion at the MC Tennis Complex.
West Alabama claimed the early edge by taking the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. Mississippi College's lone doubles victory came from Anna Hudson and Rocio Martinez Azcarraga, who earned a 6-3 win at No. 2.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Choctaws responded in singles play with resilience across the lineup.
Rocio Martinez Azcarraga quickly evened the match with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2, while Katharina Weber followed with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 3 to give MC a 2-1 lead.
After West Alabama picked up points at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to regain the advantage, Anna Hudson delivered a clutch three-set win at No. 4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3.
That set the stage for a marathon battle at No. 6.
Ann Cabot Stockett fought for nearly three hours in a back-and-forth contest before securing the clinching point, outlasting her opponent in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, to seal the 4-3 victory and the conference title for Mississippi College.
The win caps off a historic regular season for the Choctaws, who have established themselves as one of the top teams in the nation heading into postseason play.
Mississippi College Men Fall to No. 16 West Alabama
In men's action, Mississippi College dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 16 West Alabama.
The Choctaws battled throughout the match, picking up two singles victories, but were unable to overcome the Tigers' depth.
Mississippi College men will now turn its attention to Saturday where they take on Ouachita Baptist beginning at 10 a.m.
