CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College baseball couldn't overcome an early deficit as UAH walked away with an 11-8 victory to open the Gulf South Conference series on Friday, Apr. 10 at Frierson Field. MC moved to 23-17 on the season and 16-9 in the conference while the Chargers improved to 16-20 and 11-14 in league action.
Â
The Blue and White, already lead 5-1 through the first two innings, used a four-run third inning to power past MC.
Â
The Choctaws finished with 14 hits, including a season-high five doubles and a home run, but it wasn't enough to topple the visitors from the Rocket City. MC trailed 9-1 through the first three innings, but chipped away in the middle innings.
Cade Gadman drove in three runs on three hits, including a pair of RBI doubles, while
Will Langston homered, added another hit and scored twice.
Ty Murphy also collected three hits, and
Jake LaRocca drove in two runs.
Â
The Choctaws narrowed the gap with a two-run fifth and continued to apply pressure in the seventh, but a double play in the sixth and missed chances late kept them from completing the comeback.
Â
Caleb Peterson (4-4) took the loss after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits over two innings.
Blake Gollott provided 3.1 innings of relief, and
Kamryn Carlisle tossed 3.2 scoreless frames to close the game. Tyler Smith (2-1) earned the win for UAH, while Jase Gray (1) recorded the save. Smith tossed one frame in relief, surrendering four walks and one hit, but did not allow a run. Gray struck out one of the three batters he faced in the final inning.
Â
MC and UAH renew the series on Saturday, Apr. 11 with a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. The Choctaws will honor its 2003 American Southwest Conference Championship team prior to the contest.
