CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College baseball swept the Saturday doubleheader against Union, claiming a 12-1 victory in the first game followed by a thrilling 10-9 win in the second contest. MC improved to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Bulldogs fell to 7-10 and 2-7 in the league.
In the first game, the Choctaws capitalized on nine walks and four hit batters, scoring five runs in both the second and eighth innings. A quartet of MC players registered two hits, with
Ty Murphy leading the way, driving in four runs and collecting three of the team's season-high five stolen bases.
Alex Johnson, Tyrus Williams, and
Nick Slonaker each contributed two hits, and Slonaker and
JT Thigpen recorded multiple-RBI efforts.
Coby Gollott (2-1) shined on the mound, registering a career-high nine strikeouts while allowing just one run on five hits through seven innings.
Kamryn Carlisle closed the game with a scoreless eighth inning, adding two strikeouts. MC took control in the second inning with a key RBI groundout by Murphy, followed by a two-RBI single from Slonaker and a two-RBI double from Thigpen. The Choctaws expanded their lead to 7-0 by the third inning before Murphy's three-RBI double capped the scoring in the eighth.
In the second game, a pivotal seven-run fifth inning secured the sweep for the Choctaws despite a late three-run rally by Union.
JT Thigpen continued his hot streak with a home run and three RBI for the second straight game, while Tyrus Williams added a homer and a season-high four RBI.
Will Langston and
Tyler Sanderson each made significant contributions, with Langston recording two hits and two runs scored, and Sanderson reaching base twice and crossing the plate twice.
MC struck first, taking a 3-1 lead in the opening inning with an RBI walk from Johnson and a sacrifice fly from Carmichael. However, Union responded with a five-run second, highlighted by a grand slam, to take a 6-3 lead. The Choctaws rallied in the fifth with a combination of singles and a wild pitch, leading to a three-run homer from Carmichael and another from Thigpen, pushing MC ahead 10-6. Union's late surge in the sixth brought them within one, but
Kamryn Carlisle (3-1) held the line, tossing 3.2 innings in relief without allowing a run.
MC returns to action on Tuesday, March 3 against Arkansas-Monticello, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
