PENSACOLA, Fla. — Mississippi College (7-7, 4-4 Gulf South) fell to West Florida (12-3, 5-2 Gulf South) 90-77 on Sunday at UWF Field House. The Choctaws scored 40 points in the paint but were unable to overcome West Florida's 11 three-pointers.
The game opened with West Florida taking an early lead, with Anthony Igiede scoring a layup at 19:18 and Elijah Wyche adding another at 18:37. MC responded with a series of plays led by
Avaughn Johnson, whose layup at 7:59 gave the visitors a slight edge at 25-23. West Florida quickly regained momentum with Tim Hall Jr. contributing a layup at 10:23, putting the home team back in front. In the final minutes, Igiede made two crucial 3-pointers, extending West Florida's lead to 44-35. Despite a late surge from The Blue and Gold, who closed the gap with Johnson's free throws at the buzzer, West Florida held a 44-42 lead at the end of the first half.
The second half was marked by back-and-forth scoring between MC and West Florida. The Blue and Gold opened with a three-pointer from
Judah Land, assisted by
DeMarcus Powe, taking an early lead. West Florida responded swiftly with an inside jumper from Wyche to regain the lead. Ryan Payne's three-pointer at the 15:48 mark kept West Florida competitive, while MC's
Phil Nelson countered with consecutive scores, including a three-pointer and a layup. Despite MC's efforts, West Florida's Tim Hall Jr. punctuated their momentum with a late-game dunk, securing their lead and ultimately the win, as the game ended with a score of 90-77 in favor of West Florida.
