BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Mississippi College guard Phil Nelson was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday, marking the second time this season he has earned the honor during the 2025–26 campaign.

Nelson played a key role in the Choctaws' lone contest of the week, scoring a team-high 19 points to lead Mississippi College to a 69-65 win over in-state rival Delta State on Jan. 18. The freshman added five rebounds and three assists while helping hold off a late charge by the Statesmen down the stretch.

The rookie guard was efficient from the floor, shooting 5-for-10 overall, and knocked down 7-of-9 attempts from the free-throw line. His performance helped Mississippi College improve to 1-0 on the week in Gulf South Conference play.

Nelson previously earned GSC Freshman of the Week honors on Dec. 9, making him one of the league's few freshmen to receive the award multiple times this season.

Mississippi College continues GSC action later this week as the Choctaws look to build momentum in conference play behind strong contributions from their young backcourt.
