Baseball Sinks Bucs in Series Finale; Claim Series

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team picked up its fifth Gulf South Conference victory on Saturday, April 5 as the Choctaws' run-ruled Christian Brothers University for the second during the weekend, besting the Bucs, 18-3, at Frierson Field. MC improves to 24-14 on the season and 15-9 in conference play.

Seven Choctaws recorded at least a hit in the contest with six registering multiple hits. MC totaled 17 hits and scored in all six trips to the plate. Jordan Evans and JT Vance paced the squad. Vance went 3-for-5 with six RBI while Evans was 3-for-5, driving in four runs.

Bryce LaRocca and Bryce Capobianco joined Vance and Evans with three hits. Logan Shurden and Alex Johnson joined the multi-hit group with a pair of knocks each as Shurden drove in four.

MC homered three times in the contest with two coming off the bat of Vance as he closed in on the top three in career home runs, including a three-run home run in the first and solo shot in the second. Vance is tied for second on the team in the category with 10. The Union, Miss., native is two shy of reaching third all-time and tying Blaine Crim.

Evans joined the home run parade with a two-run homer in the third to increase the Choctaws' margin to 10-0. The dinger is the eighth of the season and moves the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native to fourth on the team.

Caleb Peterson (2-3) picked up the victory on the mound as he fanned seven. He allowed three runs on seven hits in five frames in the start. Coby Gollott tossed the final two innings, holding the Bucs off the scoreboard as he struck out three and did not surrender a hit.

After CBU plated three runs in the top of the fifth, Shurden ripped a two-run single in the bottom half, followed by a two-run single from Vance in the sixth and another Shurden two-run hit to cap the scoring. Capobianco sandwiched an RBI hit between the two, two-run knocks to assist the Blue and Gold.

Cameron Olivo (2-6) registered the loss for the Red and Black. He gave up seven runs on three hits alongside four walks. Jackson Licata led CBU with two hits while Cory Steinhauer drove in all three runs.

Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, April 8 as it hosts Henderson State University. First pitch is 4 p.m.
