CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College stormed back from an early deficit to take down No. 12 Delta State, 7–4, Friday evening at Frierson Field behind a clutch three-run home run from
Blaise Breerwood and strong performances on the mound.
The victory is the first for the program over a ranked opponent since March 9, 2024 – a one-run victory over No. 8 West Florida in Clinton. It is the first victory over a ranked Statesmen squad since May 8, 2018 in the NCAA South Regional in Lakeland, Fla.
DSU (32-14, 23-8 GSC) struck first, as Dylan Dendy launched a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to put the Statesmen ahead 3–0, but the Choctaws (29-19, 19-12 GSC) answered immediately, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame on back-to-back, bases-loaded walks by
JT Vance and
Logan Shurden, and a sacrifice fly from
Tyler Jacobsen to even the score.
The game remained tied until the sixth, when Breerwood crushed a two-out, three-run shot over the left-field fence off Statesmen ace Drake Fontenot (9-1), handing him his first loss of the season.
Jordan Evans added an insurance run in the seventh with a solo home run, his second hit of the game.
Choctaw starter
Holland Townes (4-5) went 7.2 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs while striking out three.
Coby Gollott locked down the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
The Green and White managed just two hits after the first inning, including a solo homer from Dylan Coleman in the eighth, but couldn't mount a comeback.
The win marks a key Gulf South Conference victory for the Choctaws as they continue their push toward the postseason.
The two Magnolia State institutions renew the series on Saturday, Apr. 25 with a doubleheader. First pitch is 1 p.m. Senior Day festivities are scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
