MONTICELLO, Ark. — JT Vance homered and drove in three runs as Mississippi College used a steady offensive attack and solid relief pitching to top Arkansas-Monticello 8-4 in a non-conference road win Tuesday, Apr. 22 at Union Bank Park.
Vance's solo shot in the seventh capped a strong day at the plate for the senior right fielder, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and was hit by a pitch. The home run for the Union, Miss., native ties him for second most on the team with 11.
Logan Shurden added a solo home run in the second inning as the Choctaws (28-19) notched their second straight win. It is Shurden's third homer of the season and the 53rd for the team.
Alex Johnson and
Blaise Breerwood joined Vance with a pair hits as MC totaled 10 in the contest. It is the 22nd time this season the team has totaled 10-plus hits in a game.
After UAM (28-18) tied the game 2-2 in the third, MC pulled away with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, capitalizing on wild pitches and defensive miscues by the Boll Weevils. A balk and an error by catcher Ethan Marvin helped plate two more Choctaw runs in the eighth.
Jimmy Wilson (1-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless action with two strikeouts. The Choctaw bullpen held UAM to just two runs over the final 6.2 innings. Defensively, the Blue and Gold turned two double plays and did not commit an error. The two double plays move the team's total to 41 on the campaign.
Ethan Nichols homered for the Boll Weevils and Kameron Woolf had an RBI double in the eighth, but it wasn't enough as UAM dropped its second straight in the series and second of the season. Starter Bryce Louis allowed two runs over two innings, but Trey Miller (2-1) took the loss after giving up two runs — one earned — in the fifth.
Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Apr. 25 as it hosts Delta State in the first of a three-game series. First pitch is 6 p.m.
