Choctaws Complete Series Sweep; Down AUM in Finale

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team extended its win streak to six games as it downed Auburn University at Montgomery, 6-3, on Saturday, March 8 at Frierson Field. MC improves to 13-8 on the season and 8-4 in Gulf South Conference action. AUM falls to 7-15, 4-8 in league play.

It is the first GSC sweep for the program since 2021 – coming against AUM in Clinton on Apr. 18 – and is the longest win streak since that season, when the Blue and Gold rattled off seven consecutive victories, including sweeps over AUM, Christian Brothers University and series finale victory against former league member, the University of West Georgia.

Bryce LaRocca provided the offensive spark for the Choctaws, delivering a pivotal two-run home run in the second inning to give MC an early 3-1 lead, one of his two hits on the day. It marked his sixth, two-hit performance of the season, which leads the team. He later reached base in the eighth on a throwing error that allowed two unearned runs to score, breaking a late tie and securing the win.

Korey Cooper joined the Lake Charles, La., native with a two-hit effort as he added an RBI to his ledger. The Dicksinson, Texas, product has four, two-hit games on the campaign and eight on the season – one back of LaRocca's team-leading nine.

Gabe Garner (3-0) was dominant in relief, tossing four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out four to earn the victory. Caleb Peterson started for the Choctaws, working five innings and allowing three runs—two earned—while striking out three.

The Warhawks jumped ahead in the first inning when Brendan York scored on a passed ball. The Blue and Gold responded in the bottom half when Jordan Evans crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk. LaRocca's homer in the second pushed the Choctaws ahead, but AUM tied it at 3-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by Kyle Hipp and a groundout by Zach Dew.

MC pulled away in the eighth when LaRocca's ground ball forced an error, allowing Evans and Tyler Jacobsen to score. Cooper added an insurance run with an RBI single up the middle.

Lucas Baggett (1-3) took the loss for Auburn Montgomery, surrendering one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning. He was one of five Warhawks to see action on the mound in the loss.

Mississippi College returns to action on Tuesday, March 11 as it travels to Arkadelphia, Ark., to face Ouachita Baptist University. First pitch is 2 p.m.
