CLINTON, Miss. –- The Mississippi College baseball team secured its third Gulf South Conference series win as it took a doubleheader from Auburn University at Montgomery on Friday, Mar. 7 at Frierson Field, rallying for a dramatic 10-9 walk-off victory in the opener before cruising to a 13-6 win in the nightcap. The Choctaws improve to 12-8 on the season and 7-4 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM moves to 7-14 and 4-7 in the league.
MC blasted six home runs in the twinbill and picked up key performances on the mound to secure the pair of wins.
In a back-and-forth affair, the Choctaws edged out AUM with a walk-off hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Alex Johnson strolled to the plate in a pinch-hit situation and was plunked with the bases loaded, sending
Jordan Evans across the dish.
Mississippi College trailed 9-8 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but tied the game on a clutch RBI single by
Tyler Jacobsen. In the ninth, Evans reached after being hit, followed by a single from
Bryce LaRocca – his second hit of the game - and a walk to
Korey Cooper, setting up
Alex Johnson's game-winning hit-by-pitch.
Cooper led the Choctaws' offense with a 3-for-4 performance, blasting a home run and driving in three runs.
Logan Shurden also homered in the win, while
Blaise Breerwood added a key double.
Coby Gollott (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out three.
The Choctaws carried their momentum into the nightcap, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. MC erupted for 13 runs on 13 hits, including four home runs.
Evans and LaRocca set the tone early with back-to-back solo homers in the first inning. The Choctaws put up seven runs in the third, highlighted by a three-run blast from
Bryce Capobianco and a two-run single from Evans. Cooper also homered for the second straight game.
Blake Gollott (3-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs over four innings, while
Jeff Liddell closed the door with three solid innings of relief to earn the save – his first of the season.
