CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team avenged an earlier season setback with a 3-0 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Wednesday, March 5 at Frierson Field. MC improves to 10-8 on the campaign while the Boll Weevils fall to 10-8.
UAM topped the Choctaws earlier this season, 3-2, in the opening game of the Houston Astros Winter Invitational. The win evened the all-time series at 21-all. Mississippi College and UAM meet for a third later this season as they square off in Monticello on Apr. 22.
Â
Hits were at a premium in the contest as the Choctaws notched three, including a pair from
Bryce LaRocca. The Lake Charles, La., native doubled in the bottom of the first for the first MC hit. It is the fifth two-hit outing of the season for the senior and the eighth multiple-hit performance.
Â
Tyler Jacobsen joined LaRocca with a double to lead off the fifth frame. It is the first double of the season for the Algonquin, Ill., product and his second extra-base hit of the season.
Â
Dylan Cope (1-0) picked up the win on the bump as he tossed 1.2 frames in relief. He struck out two as he faced four Weevil hitters.
Jack Bell (3) logged his third save of the season as he tossed the final inning, striking out one and allowing two baserunners – one walk and one hit.
Â
MC totaled all three of runs in the bottom of the sixth without recording a hit. LaRocca, who led off the inning reaching on a hit by pitch and later stole second, became the first MC run as he scored on a
JT Vance sacrifice fly to center field.
Â
A pair of walks and a second hit batter loaded the base with two outs.
Alex Johnson drew the third base-on-balls, pushing
Bryce Capobianco across the plate. Following a UAM pitching change,
Logan Shurden became the third run as he scampered across the dish on a wild pitch.
Â
UAM totaled six hits in the loss, led by Chaz Poppy with two, however, couldn't find the timely one to get on the board as the Choctaw hurlers kept the visitors from the Natural State off balance. MC pitchers totaled eight strikeouts in the contest and forced the Green and White into eight fly-ball outs and into two double plays.
Â
Dylan Vail (0-1) took the decision for UAM, tossing just two-thirds of an inning in relief. He faced five batters, allowing three hits, walking two and surrendering all three Choctaw runs. He was one of seven Weevils to see action on the bump in the contest.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, March 7 as it hosts Auburn Montgomery in Gulf South Conference action. First pitch of the twinbill is 4 p.m.
